A group of 4 colleagues stayed for 4 days for a conference. The hotel is very comfortable for business travellers - has all the facilities you need (except perhaps irons in the rooms - but they bring them when you need them).
Seen poor reviews of the breakfast but we had a very different experience - a wide variety of hot and cold food, fruits etc - and hot coffee! Rooms reasonably priced for city centre location and staff helpful and friendly.
Excellent hotel for business or leisure break

My husband and I stayed at the Melia for 3 nights. We booked through the Sol Melia website as there was a special offer (about £60 a night for a king size bed) which including breakfast for one day - which was not good!
This was the only downside of our stay. The hotel is being refurbished and re-decorated. The reception area is modern-luxe and our bedroom was outstanding. We had a great view of Madrid, a wide-screen wall-mounted TV, a huge and comfy bed, a luxury bathroom with a powerful large-head shower and his/hers basins. The whole room was newly decorated in a contemporary style with a lot of beech and glass, and lots of comfortable furniture, and lots of storage space, and modern, unusual lighting.
The staff were friendly and helpful and quick to respond to our request for tea, chocolates (complementary!), iron and to fix the switch in the bathroom when it jammed. We also got a free late check-out.
We would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again, and were thrilled with the value for money offered.
Another small downside is that the hotel is being refurbished and we ocassionally heard workmen, but they were usually discreet and the sound was not loud enough to bother us.

I booked two nights in Melia Princesa knowing the fact that in Spain 5 stars does not usually mean luxury as there is a 5 GL class for top hotels. However, 99€ (+breakfast 19€ pp) +tax 7% was quite good value in September. Some hotel brokers sell this hotel for 170€ (bf incl).
The hotel is a terrible looking 1960's Soviet Union style building with at least 20 floors but hotel rooms are located only from 4rd to12th floor which means that most rooms do not have a view to the city. Lobby is quite attractive with nice sofas.
We had a good view to the Royal Palace from the 9th floor. Furniture in the room was not the original, perhaps from the 1980's - IKEA style. I think it's a bit risky that a large brand chain like Sol Melia lets their clients to see rooms in such condition. Bed comfort was OK, TV set decent, bathroom very small. Room size (standard room) is reasonable, but could be larger for a 5 star hotel. Wall papers were dirty and ugly. Walls and furniture were green and blue.
Breakfast buffet is very good, also the bf room is nice. Sol Melia MAS card holder gets a free bf for a companion which is very good benefit. 10€ for excellent bf is good value.
Service in reception is very good and professional, some Spanish words help a lot. Also doormen are very polite and helpful.
Location is quite OK for visits to the Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor, but I prefer the other part of the Old City where the main museums and Retiro Park are. Calle Princesa (street) is not as noisy as Gran Via. Last time I lived there and will never do that again.
I got mixed feelings about this hotel - room was at 2-3 star level, but everything else was fine. I am quite sure that the hotel will soon start a major renovation project. Before the renovation starts, the hotel could offer a free entrance to the pool and sauna (now 15€ +tax 7%) to keep customers happy.
Spanish hotel rating system needs some updating. Once a hotel has been awarded 5 stars in 1960's, seems that it will never be downgraded. I also spent recently three nights in Gran Hotel Canarias which is rated 4 GL. The room was luxurious, B&O flat TV etc.
