We stayed at this hotel as part of an extended tour of China.
It is beautifully situated opposite the West Lake but also experiences traffic noise if, as happened to us, your balcony door on your lake view does not fit properly. After an attempt to repair it, we were moved to a room on the side of the building. The Housekeeper went out of her way to ensure we were happy with the change of room contacting us later in the evening and appearing at check out to speak to us.
We like this hotel very much with the accommodation being very good.
Others in our group felt it lacked some of the finesse of other Shangri-la hotels but we were perfectly happy and enjoyed food in the bar and on the terrace with attentive service throughout.
If you are in this area, do try to attend the performance of Impression West Lake - it was a fantastic evening, choreographed by the man who will be planning the opening ceremony at the Beijing Olympics.

Upon check-in, I was told to go to the 6th floor... they had upgraded our room to the Horizon Club, where breakfast, cocktails and hor dourves are served (all included). I was told my mountain view room wasn't ready (we were early), but for $50 (USD) more, I can have a lake view room. I planned to decline, but wanted to see what the room looked like anyway. The room itself was clean and nicely decorated, but the view was the most incredible sight I had ever seen. It was a chilly out and a fog sat atop the lake. I could see the dragon boats on the water. I had an unobstructed view of the gardens and grounds below. There were pagodas! In the backdrop behind the water were layers and layers of mountains. I only wish my camera's resolution was good enough to capture what those layers looked like. It was out of an ancient Chinese painting. The view from my bathroom (huge windows) was more magnificient than the view from the balcony! I do have to note that the bathroom was very nice. After a hot steamy shower, there's a 2 ft by 2 ft section in the middle of the mirror that didn't steam up like the other parts! Service was excellent, weather was tolerable for a Southern California girl like me in December. The lake itself was a 2 minute walk away... I wish I had brought my jogging shoes. The Westlake grounds are magnificent.
