We stayed here for two nights and had a very enjoyable stay. The hotel is within walking distance to the main attractions in the centre, Calgary generally is very easy to walk around. It's also got a train/tram stop right outside which is very easy to use.
The room was clean and comfortable with a great view. Very quiet too. We were pretty high up, there are 4 lifts and all are pretty quick, we didn't have a delay at all.
The reception staff were helpful and friendly. The pool was nice, though small and a little cold, the hotub was great and the gym area looked nice. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the food was delicious, the service great.
Overall we had a fantastic stay, it's not exaclty luxury but it's far nicer than typical budget accomodation. Really great location, lovely staff, fantastic food.

OK so it was the night before stampede but the reception staff were surly and just not interested. They could not find my reservation and only the fact of me presenting a travel agent voucher even kept them interested. Intitially they gave us a room with one queen bed for 3 people!!!!! This progressed to one king bed for 3, then they offered a double bed and pull out for my disabled mother. At this point I saw red and eventually let rip. Ended up with 2 queen beds on a smoking floor despite requesting a non smoking room as I am asthmatic. On asking to speak with the duty manager I got told tough take it or leave it.
Whilst this was going on another poor lady from the same travel agent was being sent out to the Sandman Galgary west on her own as they had run out of rooms.
Customer service is a laugh in this place. We reported as requested in the literature that my mother was disabled and would require assistance in the evnt of an emergency and being on the 19th floor. The reaction was well just how many floors can she walk down then!!!!
The only good point was the location right next to the LTR to get to the stampede.

Ok so the Sandman has some pros and some definate cons. Pros first. The hotel is in a great location to get on the street car (public transit). Whether you are going or coming to the hotel, both stations are visable from the door. Another pro is that there is free parking if you drive but i recommend that you take inventory of whats in your car, because our license plate was stolen. The garage isnt locked and it doesn't even have a door. Let me tell you that did cause a lot of ttrouble because we were going to go to banff that afternoon but we had go to the airport rental car place and get a whole new car and then file a police report after that. Well away from that i'll finish the pros. The lobby is very nice and the staff were very helpfull. There is a decent pool that is saltwater. Only guests can use the elevator to get up to the rooms because you require a key card to go anywhere which makes you feel safer about theft. its a lot cheaper than others.
CONS: The rooms are decent. The beds are very incomfortable and the bathroom is TINY. We were in a room with 2 queens. And the overall feeling of the room was grungy. Its definalty livable but its nothing fancy.
Obviously the theft is another con. And the elevator feels like an amusement park ride its so fast.the outside of the building is hideous.
If i was going back to calgary during stampede i wouldnt choose to stay at this hotel again. i would book it eaarlier so i get a nicer one.

Arrived night before Stampede. Hotel reception quite busy but staff relatively friendly. Room was dated and surface clean/tidy , dont expect pristine deep cleaning. Budget hotel but like most things in life , you pays your money and you makes your choice.
Very handy for train system but slightly dodgy looking area next to train stop. Edge of downtown.

The Sandman is not a pleasant place...the good bits first - next to the Calgary rail system so trains and transport all very easy, now scratching my brains for more good points...oh yes the coffee machine did work!...oh yes and there were some scantily clad waitresses which kept me intersted but my wife was not so impressed
Other than that the place is dark and run down (even though they claim to have spent money recently on a refurb). Bedrooms are airless and hot and the aircon came out of the 1960s.
Also watch out for Crack Corner just opposite the hotel where the local drug dealers can be openly seen dealing and smoking their product - great if you are a crack head but I suspect most of us are not!
Would I go again - no way.
