Having read the previous reviews, some highly critical, I approached Cape Sounion with considerable trepidation. Was very pleasantly surprised. In summary:
Pros
Gorgeous location not far from Athens. The sunsets over the temple of Poseidon are truly breathtaking.
Lovely, clean sea. Nicely kept beach, good service.
Constant light breeze that helps enormously in the hot summer days.
Lovely sea-water pool.
Good architecture. Rooms and bathrooms are spacious, nicely laid out, most with good views.
Excellent aircon.
Nice (basic) restaurant by pool, better than most tavernas, with a good selection for all ages, excellent drinks, including delicious fruit punches. Marginally understaffed.
Excellent main restaurant serving delicious fresh fish, excellent service.
Good and spacious gathering areas
Large (complimentary) breakfast.
Cons
Huge prices. As quests are essentially “captive” with nowhere else to go, everything gets charged and the mark-ups are huge. As a seasonal business, they are entitled to charge what the market will bear.
Need to pay for internet connection. At these prices, it should be free.
One phone only, in bedroom. If you want to use it and your better half is still sleeping, you are out of luck. In my case, it didn’t work at all, was changed twice and still didn’t work.
Marginally slow room service but due to the spread-out layout, not surprising.
Some traffic noise
General
The Hotel was staffed largely by young Eastern Europeans who try their very best but don't have the experience and service attitude one expects from more seasoned staff. Service problems, especially at the beginning of the season, are inevitable.
Can count my three day stay as extremely pleasant, at probably the nicest location within a rearsonable driving distance from Athens. Closest competitor is the Astir in Vouliagmeni (now Westin) which superior in terms of location, but lags in terms of sea quality, architecture, restaurants or overall ambiance and whose prices are broadly similar. Perhaps not a five star in terms of value for money and the minor inconveniences, but the beach and especially the views, go a very long way to compensate. Sitting on the beach at midnight, under a full moon, looking at the sea and the temple, with a glass of champagne was wonderful. I’d very happily visit Cape Sounion again and recommend it.

Overall, the setting for this hotel is quite magnificent, but after seeing the pricing and experiencing the facilities, service and food, I agree completely with the previous reviewers that this hotel is seriously overpriced and over-rated. Appointments in the room are dysfunctional, the beds are only mid-grade, and the fit-and-finish are second-rate, at best. Hiding behind the title of "eco-resort" doesn't give hotel management the excuse to allow the weeds to grow, nor to let this place look shabby and unkempt. Avoid this hotel!!!!

Awful experience, don’t even think about it!!!
I am Greek and I am ashamed, the owners are supposed to be famous and important in Greece it is so RIDICULOUS.
After 10pm there are only 2 employees at the room service so you have to wait for like 50 mins.
we waited 20 mins to be escorted to the room
dirty glasses on the balcony table from previous guests
light bulbs in the garden were burnt and damaged and we almost got injured and
some employees do not speak greek or english because its cheaper for the company to hire foreigners
Finally WE PAID 400? for a bungalow which had no sense of privacy THOUGH IT WAS ARRANGED AND PROMOTED SO. The balconies are ADJACENT!
Grecotel is really far from reaching the standards of other chains.

We paid 3,300 Euros a night for a three night stay (9,900 euros in total).
The room decor was gold lame sofas, basic plumbing, and the 'two bedroom suite' was in fact one bedroom, with the entrance hall having a sofa bed in it - this WAS NOT A SECOND BEDROOM - as they advertise.
Whilst the staff were friendly, the food in the restaurant was poor. The wine list consisted of 5 bad greek white wines, and five greek reds and a couple of Rose wines. Not what you expect form a '5* hotel'.
Whilst the common areas are well presented, this give an illusion of luxury not matched in any way by the rooms, food, service, and wines.
The room that we stayed in was worth no more than 1,500 Euros a night - and quite frankly you would expect a lot more for this money, including a heated pool - which was so cold it could not be used.
The main pool is right next to a busy main road, and is noisy.
I REALLY resent being ripped off - value for money is key. I don't mind paying as long as I get the quality that I pay for - this was daylight robbery.
The manager was apologetic, and said that he would feed back my thoughts to the senior managers who set the pricing.
I get the feeling that nothing will be done, which is why the hotel was virtually empty when we arrived and when we left.
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE UNTIL THEY HALVE THEIR PRICES

Stayed at Grecotel Cape Sounio for 2 nights in early May and glad that I didn’t stay any longer!
The views are indeed excellent but staff went out of their way to spoil the holiday.
Upon arrival, I asked to be moved to a room with a queen size bed. I was advised that the hotel was fully booked (it looked at best ? occupied). However, Reception promised to call back but never did. My second call produced a similar result (makes you recall Oceans’ 13, actually!). Only when I came to the Reception (which is located in a different building), did they bother to look up availability in their system. To be fair, they managed to find a room but the move took two hours and none of the welcome amenities moved with me.
The delay was especially annoying as I was staying only for 2 nights and time was at a premium. As a result of the hassle, I’ve had to miss the famous Sounio sunset.
The housekeeping button on the phone didn’t seem to connect to Housekeeping. In fact, it didn’t seem to connect ot anyone at all as non of my many calls was answered. Extra towels took 2 calls to the Reception and about one hour to arrive.
Buffet dinner was sumptuous but very expensive (EUR 55 per person without drinks and you had to pay for even the soft drinks). Breakfast was pretty standard, I’d even say slightly below average compared to other 5 star hotels that I’ve stayed at.
The standard bungalow that I had was beautifully appointed with an excellent view of the Temple. The bed and the bathtub were comfortable.
However, housekeeping was a spectacular failure.
On my way back to the hotel from the Temple in the afternoon, I had a lingering suspicion that my room may not have been made. I couldn’t have been more right!
Imagine how it feels to walk into your room after a strenuous 5-hour walk only to find out that:
1. the maid didn’t take out the garbage (the can was full by the way).
2. the bathroom wasn’t cleaned after shower.
3. they didn’t replace any amenities, and
4. there was no toilet paper or napkins left.
Yuk.
But the bed was made, so housekeeping had been there!
Prices at the pool bar are punitive (just as anywhere else in the resort). Expect to pay EUR 6.2 for a cup of capucchino vs. EUR 4.5 at a really expensive Athens caf?.
The hotel has its own beach located in a lovely creek facing the Temple. The beach is accessible from the Athens-Sounion road so quite a few locals stop by at the weekend. The beach near the Aegeon hotel down the road looked nicer, though.
The evening of my departure, they put a guest questionnaire under the ash-tray on the terrace. The trouble is, they didn’t bother to remove litter from the ash-tray. Not that I expected them to do that.
Overall, the service at this hotel is definitely not up to the 5-star level (or any level, for that matter). This short stay dealt a severe blow to my plans of staying at other Grecotel properties going forward.
Arguably, I may simply have been unlucky, but the fact that none of the staff apologized for the mishaps makes me think that all these services failures had more to do with attitude rather than luck.
Needless to say, I would not recommend this property to anyone and would suggest that Grecotel management send all of the hotel staff on a hospitality training.
