After having read tripavisors we booked the Aigle Noir.
The hotel is good value for money, nice and helpful customer service.
Only one thing: room service works only from sunday to thursday so if you need it on the week end, go outside it and buy it.

I was pleasently suprised by the friendly staff (let's face it France isn't famous for its smiley service!) and high quality service received throughout. We had the opportunity to visit a few rooms in order to choose and we were satisfied with all three choices. Ideally located, central to all activities, I highly recommend to stay at this historical hotel! Two thumbs up (make that four with my wife!)

What a beautiful surprise this Hotel was. This was the third time I came to Fontainebleau but had never stayed in the Aigle Noir before. I would recommend it to anyone planning to visit the town. My wife and I especially enjoy these types of traditional, authentic hotels. The city is full of history and beauty and the Hotel makes for a perfect extension of the day's visits. The location is impeccable as it's right in front of one of the castle's entrances and the main entrance gives way to the city's biggest public square! The service was almost impeccable. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. My only regret was the breakfast which was a bit limited but still plentiful. It is by far the best hotel I have experienced in town.

Had stayed many times at Aigle Noir previously and it had been ok. For this visit of 6 nights in late September I booked in June, only to be told upon arrival that they had no record of my reservation and that they were fully booked. After a bit of searching the receptionist found a piece of paper in a folder with my reservation but was told it had never been entered into their computer system (their error, but no apology) They then offered me the room adapted for a wheelchair user which I rejected - ground floor, opposite a function room which was constantly in use, no safe, and was as cold as a fridge since that section of the hotel wasn't regulary heated. Another room in the "full" hotel was then offered - small but ok - until the first night -the bed was the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on (the matress was so cheap that you could hear the springs creak as you moved) I asked the next day to be moved to another room as I still had 5 nights to endure. Not possible, and anyway I was told this was a newly replaced mattress and all rooms would have the same(must have got a cheap job lot). By the end of my stay I was in need of a chiropractor. Maid service was poor, they had an aversion to replacing consumables including toilet paper. Room rate of 160 Euros per night was very expensive for what you got, plus there was a charge of an additional 15 Euros for breakfast (where anything that ran out was not replaced so going early was the only way to get any value). Arriving 50 mins before the end of breakfast one day, there was nothing much left except coffee and baguette - very expensive at 15 Euros. Oh yes, and did I mention that there was renovation work in progress which of course was not mentioned at the time of booking. Anyone with a desire to sleep late or take a day time nap had no chance as the workmen banged and drilled away. My last stay there for sure.
