Adequate but expensive by Chinese standards

We had some problems at the outset. Two separate relatives helped me make reservations and were quoted prices of 290 RMB and 390 RMB, respectively. When we showed up, we were told that there was only 1 room available for 390 RMB, so we had to take 2 deluxe rooms at 480 RMB. Our deluxe rooms had 2 single beds each (granted the room was large) and a very cramped bathroom (because they installed a jacuzzi and a small sauna in it). I saw a cockroach crawling out of the sauna so did not avail myself of the "luxury"...
Otherwise, the rooms were average. Slippers, check; electric hot water kettle, check; cable TV, check. Toilet leaked but was not loud, so we were not disturbed. Breakfast was included and was plentiful. I would not bother with the western items at breakfast, it's not their forte. The view from our room was forgettable, but that's not the hotel's fault (the province of Shanxi is known for its excellent coal, so what kind of view would you expect?).
I will say, however, that the nearby Yungang Grottoes were fabulous and made our overnight stay in Datong worthwhile.
