stayed in Jun 2008
Date of stay: June 5th to 12th, 2008
Type of room: standard apartment
The hotel: nice, clean and well maintained, it is not a luxury hotel (at least not the standards apartments), so if it is luxury you’re looking for – go somewhere else. As a matter of fact, go to Cassandra, here in Sithonia is a little bit of a bore. On the other hand, if you're looking for peace and quiet, this is your place.
The room: rooms are nice, clean, housekeeping cleans every day and they change the sheets every 3 days (at least on my stay). As I previously stated, standards rooms are not luxurious, but they are OK. The shower is very, very small, as a matter of fact, there is no way you can shower without spilling water all over the floor, thus, creating a mess because when you go out of the bathroom there is no rug. But hey, housekeeping sweeps the floor everyday ?
There are basic kitchen utilities (forks, knives, spoons and dishes), a refrigerator and a stove.
The TV is only greek channels ?
The restaurant and the food: I was on a half board basis, the food was good, I can’t complain, a little variation would have been appreciated, but it was generally OK. The personnel at the restaurant is very friendly (waiters are Macedonians, housekeeping - Bulgarians) and, contrary to what most of the information in the internet states, most of the Greeks speak English, at least at an acceptable level.
The “room facilities”: everything that comes in the web site is true: the umbrellas and sun beds at the beach and the pool are free, AC (I did not use it, the weather was cold), daily cleaning, etc. With one exception: the internet is NOT free! In the website it is listed as if it is a free, well, it is not. Keep in mind that I called before coming and the girl at the reception confirmed that it was free. When I arrived, it turned out that it is not. The reply to my question why was I told it is free was “but it is only 5 Euro!” My numerous attempts to explain that it is not about the price, but about the fact that I was lied to or miss informed where futile. Anyways, I spoke with the manager and he told me he would check, after that I had several hours of internet but the whole service went down (the internet is trough satellite and there is a hotspot wi fi). Bottom line: in theory the wi fi is 5 Euros per 48 hours, there is a cable on the reception which you can hook up to your laptop and it’s supposedly free… If you depend on internet connection, I suggest you check this matter vey well before coming. Even when the wi fi is up, the speed is horrible.
Pool area: nice, well maintained and pleasant, there is a beach and pool bar, one coffee is 2 Euros.
The beach: the beach strip is about 100 meters from the hotel, umbrellas and sun beds are free of charge and there is even a small bar at the beach. The sand is a little bit rocky but its ok, if you don't like this particular beach you can always go to another one, the beaches are properly marked and you can exit from the main road and find a beach suitable for yourself.
PS 1: Keep in mind that the sing on the main road pointing the hotel easy to pass by, it is low in the bushes and the color blends with them, so watch out after the “tristiniki” sign, in 30 seconds you’ll see the hotel sign (refer to the “driving directions” section of the hotel’s web site).
PS 2: Bring whatever anti mosquito protection you can get your hand on! Greek mosquitos are nasty! (there is a swamp in the near by vicinity of the hotel, so you can imagine…)

The Despotiko was a Charmer

We were booked at the Depotiko through a package deal made with Gate 1 Travel. We had planned the Greek vacation, (10-day Greek Islander), before we got the idea of getting married on Santorini. After we had made our wedding plans, my wife-to-be told the Gate 1 agent that we would be getting married on our trip. The agent on her own volition, said she would contact the hotels we would be staying at and inform them about our wedding plans. I don't have the Gate 1 agent's name, but I have to say that this was a very thoughtful gesture. Because of her action, I believe we got a nicer room than the other Gate 1 people who were also staying there. We had room 27 which overlooked the pool and had a nice view of the 18th century windmill on the other side of the hill.
The Despotiko is a family run hotel and has that sort of charm that only a small hotel can have; lots of personality versus cold efficiency. It is constructed in classic Greek architecture and is pleasing to look at. The outer courtyard by the pool was inviting and pleasant. The Despotiko was once the home of a bishop, and a small chapel is located in the back of the property. The bathroom and shower are tiny, but all things on Mykonos seem compact – just look at how the local people live in town. The room was basic and clean. As other Trip Advisor reviewers have noted, you will be spending most of your time out exploring Mykonos and not in your room. The continental breakfast was good.
The Despotiko is on a hill, but I don't think this is a problem for anyone in decent physical condition. Once you get down the hill, you are right at the doorstep of the beautiful city of Korfu.
The only warning that I would give someone considering staying at the Despotiko would be to make sure they got a room away from the street. The motorized scooters that go up and down the street at all hours of the day and night can be quite loud.
Don't forget to feed the friendly little cat who resides in the courtyard area, he'll appreciate it.
