We stayed here 2 years ago because of our guide book.
The room was very nice and very clean as well as the building.
The only thing we have to complaint is that the second day, they forgot to give us new towels. It was late when we saw it and we left the next morning so we haden't said anything and took our own towels.
When we came back in Europe, we saw that they charged us the price for towels as we had stolen them...

I've traveled all over the world, and the Padre Oaks is simply a great deal overall. If you are a person who appreciates old houses over McMansions, a little quaint motor inn over a fancy 20 story mega-hotel, you might really like the Padre Oaks. To me, it was a really great, very inexpensive, clean place to stay for the night. I was really worried by some of the reviews, but some of them revealed more about the writer than the Padre Oaks, I think. If you appreciate people from other cultures, and smile instead of demand, show interest in the hotel when you speak to the owners, and enjoy their beautiful flowers planted everywhere (even wild lillies growing out the bathroom window!), the Padre Oaks is a fine choice. My room was simple, clean and nicely decorated for an older hotel, not shabby at all. They had everything I needed and none of the glitz. I felt safe there as a single woman traveling alone -- and the price was beyond belief. I would definitely stay there again. It's lovely.

Before booking this place online, we tried calling to ask a quick question. A woman answered curtly, and then when my boyfriend asked her to wait for a moment, she hung up. We tried calling again to complete the call we'd started, but the phone just rang and rang endlessly. This should've been a warning to me of what was to come, and I was a little worried, but didn't think it would be a total deal breaker.
I was wrong.
We arrived at the hotel unexpectedly late because we were coming from San Francisco and after picking up some stuff from my brother's house it had gotten later than we'd intended. Ringing the office bell around 11, a woman came out and started checking us in. At one point she started questioning how many people we'd have staying in the room because my brother was with me and my boyfriend, helping us move luggage before we went out for some drinks after checking in. We explained he was only helping, and wouldn't be staying. Then, after handing us back a credit card slip with more than the "Total price" we'd been quoted in our email confirmation from the hotel website, we asked what the additional $15 dollars was. She said it was tax, and my boyfriend proceeded to explain that we had read the email confirmation very carefully and that there had been no mention of an additional charge for tax. She immediately started talking about how if we want to cancel, we'd have to pay for 1 night, and we were a little flabbergasted, because we had no intention of canceling over the issue. So when we convinced her that we wanted to in fact stay anyways, she said she had to check what the email says "in the internet. It will be 15 minutes," and then slammed her little office window that we'd been talking through shut in our faces and latched it closed. She had done this so quickly, we didn't have a chance to protest the amount of time she was expecting this checking to take. After debating amongst ourselves for a moment, we looked up the email through my brother's blackberry, and decided to ring the bell and show them the email that way. This time, a man came out and pretty much immediately sat down and started creating a refund for the room charge (which the woman had insisted would be fully prepaid for the two nights' stay). We attempted to show the email we received, but now the woman was accusing us of trying to have 3 people when we'd only reserved for 2 again, and they were saying that we couldn't stay there, and basically acting like complete idiots. They wouldn't listen to reason when we repeated that my brother wasn't staying, and they started saying they'd call the police if we didn't leave immediately. All this because we expected them to be able to honor a statement of total price, one which leaves no room for an additional $15 of tax, an addition that's easy enough to mention in a confirmation email.
Potential travelers beware! This place is probably not worth the exra 10 or 20 bucks you'll be saving from the places down the street!

This was, by far, the worse experienc I have ever had staying in a motel. The employees were rude beyond my comprehension.
Upon entering the lobby I could barely stomach the stench of curried lamb billowing out of the manager's apartment -- attached to the lobby.
Checking in was relatively painful, but the room was horrid. Tiny, smelly and out dated! Perhaps that's what I get when I booked the room for $35/night online. It was pretty apparent that the front desk staff didn't like the low rate I had gotten.
Nonetheless, these people handled themselves in a very unprofessional way. They interrupted us in our room at a late hour to "get a deposit or call the police and have us removed!"
As I said before, I have NEVER encountered anything like this. I think it was really extortion -- but, I paid a cash deposit and cancelled our reservation for the next night and left promptly in the morning.
What a nightmare!
