We have just returned from a 4 day break at the Luz Bay Club Hotel, Praia de Luz, Portugal. My husband booked for my friend and I as a 40th birthday present and what a fantastic time we had. Holiday was booked through easyjet holidays. We booked airport transfers with taxisabroad.com - very reasonably priced and punctual. Our flight landed at Faro at 9.30am and we where sat around the pool (all unpacked) by 11.30am (it was an hour transfer from the airport). We had a large room, living room had a double sofa bed and full size fridge, then double/twin bedroom, with tv and dressing table (no tea/coffee making facilities, we took our own). Bathroom had full size bath and shower and no problems with the supply of hot water! Air con provided too and plenty of wardrobe/drawer space. Breakfast was included which was served from 7.30am - 10.00am, plenty of variety including cold/hot buffet and on our last day we had to leave for the airport at 7.15am so we where given a packed breakfast to take with us. Pool area is lovely, 1 large pool which appears to be for adults only and another large pool and childrens pool. It was so peaceful, all you could hear was the birds, it was an idyllic setting for a peaceful getaway and we came home feeling totally relaxed!. Snack bar very reasonable too.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 days and we were glad to leave. The hotel room we were given was average but it had a horrible odour and there was a great big crack in the wall above the bed. They could have given us a better room considering there were only about 6 guests staying at that time. The whole hotel needed refurbishing as the tennis courts were dilapidated and the outdoor pool was freezing.
The hotel reception staff were always away from the desk and when I had asked the man at reception to order us a taxi, he seemed like he was put out and was very rude, then asked for 50cent for the call, you wouldn’t expect this behavior at a 4 star hotel! This hotel is definitely not worth the money we paid and I have to agree it is more 3 star rather than 4!

Secured what we thought was a good late deal from Travel Agent.
Flew from Manchester at 14:35 out and 18:35 back and did not encounter any of the problems many people have posted on various websites about delays, frustrations at passport control.
All flights on time.
Transfers to & from accommodation organised by Thomas Cook were excellent, presumably in part to the low season demands - but you can only judge what you experience.
Hotel is in a nice setting with new building work completed in and around the area.
Not too far to walk for beach and restaurants.
Accommodation was very clean - clean each day with fresh towels.
Reception staff helpful and pleasant.
Rooms are very basic with 2 twin beds (unless you upgrade to suite which is limited and only available to certain travel providers)
TV provided with BBC1 available, though signal disappears when weather is bad.
Only 1 bedroom chair for the desk povided so nowhere to sit other than the beds if the weather is bad.
Basic 2 plastic chairs & table on the balcony.
Somewhere between 2 and 3 star. (Do not compare star ratings here compare to USA for example)
Pools not heated so actually colder than the sea in off season.
We stayed B & B and the food on offer was a mixture of German and English taste and just about acceptable.
Tried an evening meal for set price of 19 Euros.
Absolutely, dreadful - dont go anywhere near this. Pity those who were on half board.
Bar prices high for snacks and drinks and were also poor.
The resort of Praia da Luz itself is made uo of only very few hotels, most accommodation is self catering style from prvate lets to large company blocks of apartments. Also a large contingency of resident Brits in the area. Much new building work is still going on in the outskirts of town.
When high season comes there will not be enough room for all the people to walk around let alone get on the lovely beach.
Take care when selecting restaurants, most charge around the same prices but the quality differs a lot.
Note prices in Luz tend to be higher than the nearby Lagos due to lack of competition.
For food in restaurants expect to pay about 16 euros for the main course.
Went to Forteleza Restaurant - lovely setting - walked out when main courses were tasted - awful would not recommend at all - at least we were not charged for main course.
O Antonio's very good but watch when you go. Not able to cope when busy if they are not expecting a busy night and the service and food suffers a bit.
Cavaleiro da Luz was good food with friendly service.
Atlantico very good, all portions sererately priced though. But at least you only get what you want on the plates and can ask for special requests and they are obliging. The cost is not noticably higher than the others.
Chiccas cafe excellent food but way over priced for what you get.
Bus services good and connections to other towns via Lagos reasonable.
Cost of bus to Lagos only 1.8 Euros per person. Taxi about 10 euros with small tip.
Dont bother going to Bergau. Nice journey shame about the place. Its a building site as are many areas of the Algarve with the demand by holiday makers for the sun, golf and people wanting seciond homes or retirement properties.
The whole area has become expensive compared to a few a years ago.
