At first we weren't impressed because the room was very dark and the hotel looked quite old. However, the staff were very helpful; coming to the room to help us figure out how to turn on the lights (didn't know there was a master switch) and placing extra blankets in our room when we thought it was going to be chilly that evening. We stayed on the 3rd floor and did not hear any noise from the pub. Another plus about this place is it's location. It was very close to the bridge where you have a great view of the Matterhorn and about 2 minutes from the main street with all the window shopping. All in all, I enjoyed staying here.

Noisy? Not at all!
I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about. Last winter
we booked with our group the Hotel Astorai, and for me it wasn't noisy
at all! We had quite a big room with television and it was very clean
too. (Even my wife couldn't complain :-) ) The food was excellent and
the staff was very friendly, especially Miss Sieber the manager of the
hotel. It's location is quite ok, it's not far from the stations to the
mountain regions.
Next year I'll definitely book there again!
Greetings Max Mallowan

We booked at the Astoria because it was the only room available in Zermatt, and we were placed in room 101 right over Papperla Pub. When other reviews say it can be noisy they are understating the problem - the windows rattled with every bass beat and it was unbearable until 1a.m. I am sure it was the same for the room next door. The evening desk staff was very friendly and helpful, but the day staff was less than accomodating. The hotel eventually moved us to another room, but we had to move each night due to other booking conflicts. Overall, the food was good, our rooms were clean and nice, the location is good, but the sound condition is intolerable! Make sure not to be onthe first floor.

The Astoria Hotel is not an exceptable place for a ski club to stay because the dining area is split is half and small. There is really no lobby where people can meet and socialize. Antonio, the head waiter and mixologist is wonderfully attentive and friendly. The day time receptionists were also friendly and helpful. The location is excellent in terms of ease to ski slope transportation and access to the town. However, it is located next to a bar/disco and outside noise is a definite factor especially on weekends.
For ski clubs. there are better options available.

Can be noisy

The room we stayed in was big & clean but located above a pub.
very noisy up to midnight - no one to complain to in reception (not staffed at night).
When we checked out, the owner claimed that there is nothing to be done about it.
conclusion: ask for a room away from the pub when booking.
