This hotel was very dated, with pea green decor in the rooms. The bed was very, very hard - being 5 months pregnant, this wasn't a great feature. The receptionist was very friendly and welcoming, though one of the workers barged in on our room one morning without even knocking. The breakfast was held next door at the 4-star hotel and was pleasant, but there was no cooked food (i.e. eggs, bacon, etc) only cold cuts, cereals, and sweets. The attendant in the dining hall there was very sweet and spoke many languages. Our room was warm enough for the time of year, we had plenty of hot water for showers, and the location was only a five-minute walk from the main street. Also, the hotel offers a shuttle service (via electric car) to the hotel - even though it's only 7 minutes walking from the train station, it's nice to have when you've got luggage.
Our view of the Matterhorn was perfect - that was the best feature of our stay at Hotel Alfa.

Booked the day before, during an independent tour week of Switzerland, this was by far the cheapest room during my stay and has been judged on value for money.
Very pleasant service from all at the hotel. The lady owner is charming, and absolutely everyone else had a smile and greeting at hand, be it at the bar or serving breakfast.
Breakfast buffet was very well presented in the next door Hotel Metropol, in a beautiful room with clear views of the Matterhorn.
Very cosy bar in Hotel Alfa itself, as pictured, and quiet alcove for free internet access next to the bar.
Travelling alone this time, the room provided to me was the smallest I have ever stayed in: two steps and you were across it. A sink in the room and the bathroom convenient enough just a few steps down the hall. A small wall mounted TV. View to the rear of the bulding, overlooking other chalet type hotels but pleasant enough. Please bear in mind that this was a budget room and the hotel brochure suggests that far more spacious and comfortable rooms are available.
The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the train station, but only if happen to know where you are going, If you have heavy bags a lift in an electric taxi is advisable. I had walked, and found the local tourist office map tiny to read and hard to follow, so spent a good while lugging my bag around the streets to find the hotel. As a hopefully helpful tip, it is located between the river and the artifical sports pitches, which are around a third of the way up the main street, on the left, walking from the station square.
The appeal of Zermatt is apparent the second you walk out of the door and, as a budget means of staying there, Hotel Alfa has something to offer because of its friendliness and good service.

The best thing about staying here was the use of the wellness center at the next door Metropol Hotel (about CH15 extra per day). Breakfast was also at the Metropol hotel. We paid a higher room rate to guarantee a Matterhorn view. We were in room 24 and the "Matterhorn view" was a view of the back of the Metropol Hotel. To get the best view, avoid all rooms ending in "4" (the left side of the hotel). This is an average hotel in good walking distance to the train station.
