I booked a room at the La Mansion del Rio for my husband's 40th birthday. We live in San Antonio and this hotel is known by the locals as the jewel of the Riverwalk -- there is no question about where to stay.
When I made my reservation for a deluxe room, which I booked directly though the hotel, I was asked if this was a special occasion. I told them that yes, it was and we completed the reservation.
About a week later, I got an email from the hotel inquiring about the occasion. I told them how much I appreciated their anticipating my needs before we even arrived and explained that this overnight jaunt was for my husband's birthday.
I also emailed Omni corporate directly, letting them know how much I appreciated their desire to make our stay special.
Two days before our arrival, I got a confirmation email from the La Mansion. The hotel had upgraded our room to a Riverview King.
We were allowed to do very early -- before noon. When we found our room there was a large piece of chocolate cake with "Happy Birthday" on it waiting for us, and a personalized birthday card for my husband, noting his 40th birthday and addressing him by name.
Our room was of average size, was in excellent condition and was beautiful. We were on the 4th floor, with a semi-private balcony overlooking the Riverwalk. The french doors didn't let in a whole lot of light, but that's the exchange you make for a non-standard hotel room. It was still beautiful and the room did not seem overly dark or cave-like.
The bathroom was beautiful and while it was smaller than some over five-star hotels, it had a separate vanity area outside the bathroom itself that provided a great place for putting makeup or drying your hair.
We ordered room service for breakfast in the morning and something happened that has never happened at any other hotel -- the room service attendant advised me that gratuity was already included in the bill, meaning that further tipping was not necessary.
Every other hotel has gladly accepted extra money without ever noting that tip was already included.
We couldn't have been happier with our stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone who plans to visit San Antonio. You will not be disappointed.

This property exceeded my expectations. Often I find that after reading reviews online I am disappointed when I actually arrive. We however found the desk staff to be helpful and polite. The room was terrific. It was a double riverview room on the first floor. We had a shared balcony that was a few steps above the heads of tourists walking along the riverwalk. At night it was a treat to sit outside on the balcony and take in the scene.
Our children enjoyed the pool which stays open until 10pm. They played a movie on Saturday evening projected on the wall above the pool. The kids thought this was great and they handed out free popcorn for children that were enjoying the movie. Nice for the parents too because the bar was open for the duration. The kids also enjoyed the "worry dolls" they received on turndown service. They also enjoyed the nightly cookies that were delivered to our rooms. Really a great hotel for those travelling with children.
Parking was convenient across the street in the city lot for $6/day which beats $28 charged by the hotel.
A wonderful trip and room was always clean and comfortable.

Wife and I took a weekend trip to San Antonio, Texas on 6/20/08-06/22/08 and decided to stay La Mansion upon hearing good reviews about this hotel. First I would like to comment that this hotel is VERY nice. Overall, the rooms were pretty clean, but a little small. Bathrooms were clean as well, except that I noticed that the bath robes hanging in the bathroom were a little stained. Didn't matter, we didn't use them anyway, but the stains were noticeable. Staff was friendly and check-in was done very quickly. Upon checking in, I asked what type of view I would have in my room. They said it was a street view. When I asked for a pool view or a river view, they stated that there were none available. We went up to our room and open the window and saw that we had more of a parking garage view. After settling in, wife and I took a tour of the hotel. It is a beautiful hotel and has a very classy feel. However, as we passed the lobby we saw some travelers that had just checked in and they walked straight to a room with a nice pool view (huh, thought they were all booked). I didn't complain, but I was a bit dissappointed.
BEWARE: The rooms facing the street and parking garage are NOT for those looking for a good nights rest. We heard loud banging noises early in the morning as if a garbage truck was picking up trash and dropping the metal cans onto the street. You also hear loud motorcycles and trucks as they zoom by. You hear all the honking and everything else that goes with a busy street.
Another thing to consider is that if you like shopping this hotel is a little far for walking to the mall and then hauling all your stuff that you bought back to the hotel.
Overall I thought that the hotel and the staff were great, but I would not stay here again unless they could promise me a room away from the busy street below.
