So we got a Costco offer for Cancun and the Omni Hotel was listed as a 3+ start hotel.
so we booked and went... here is what i have found...
GOOD:
1. Hotel staff is great...
2. If you ignore the request to attend/call the timeshare people you are ok.
3. rooms is great, great view, great hotel and so much more than i thought it would be.
Bad:
1. Having a child with you is a bit hard since they will give you a crib (pack your own sheets) but some places you can't to to with a stroller you may have to pick it up and walk it down the stares but the staff will help you if they see you.
2. pools are not heated
3. beach still had big rocks while other hotel got them removed (issue in Cancun from what i was told)
other than that we enjoyed everything about it...
i have a collection of photos of the hotel listed on my flickr account
check them out at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dawouds/sets/72157604676976317/
enjoy
George

SWIMMING POOLS – great! Well-designed, not overly crowded, lots of fun.
BEACH – no swimming due to sharp rocks, but great area for beach walking.
ROOMS – nice, nothing extraordinary, but loved the two benches with pillows on the balcony. They were super for reading. We had a lagoon view room, which is disappointing when the beach is so gorgeous, but the challenging part was that we enjoy spending time on the balcony relaxing and the air conditioning units for the Oasis Hotel next door were so close that it made it constantly noisy on our balcony. Because of the noise and the low quality of the buffets, we chose to change hotels to the Riu Palace Las Americas Hotel in the middle of our stay. If you weren’t on the All-inclusive food plan and didn’t intend to eat there, you’d probably be fine since the pools are so nice. Did seem odd to us that the mini-bar items in the room were not included in the all-inclusive plan as they always are at the Riu Palace hotels where we’ve stayed.
FOOD – we found the breakfast buffet nothing special and the dinner buffet left us thankful there was room service. There is no lunch buffet. Food presentation for the a la carte is fantastic. Because the hotel offers both European Plan and All-Inclusive, it doesn’t seem like many people eat at the hotel. The food would be extremely expensive and not at all worth it if you aren’t on the All-Inclusive.
STAFF – everyone was very friendly and helpful.

I just returned from Omni Cancun yesterday. It is mostly what I expected from the reviews I had read before I went. First the good things about the trip.
I had booked an all inclusive trip through Costco and I am very happy I did that. Here is why: Although it's a very popular tourist destination, it is clearly not a what you see is what you get kind of destination. An example is on our tour to the Chichin itza, we were warned numerous times by out tour guide from Gray line about time share sales representatives, etc. At least with Costco, there were no surprises and no hassle at check out time. All inclusive is the way to go, a bottle of water would cost $2 each and you would consume a lot of that in Cancun. It included all the tips, so again very helpful in limiting cost and not needing to carry any cash around.
Secondly, the wait staff at Omni were mostly very helpful and courteous. They were probably the best part of the hotel.
Also, the weather was hot but bearable and Omni had many pools, one for kids that was only about 1.5 foot deep.
The negatives?
Cancun's beaches are all devastated since the hurricanes and there is really no safe area to swim in and most of the beach is all rock, no matter which hotel you are staying at.
Next, the time share sales people are every where and quite annoying. Stay clear of them as much as possible.
Although having bought the all inclusive package allowed for plenty of water and food and drinks, the food is all very greasy. Even the grilled vegetable is flowing with grease and after a couple of days, all you want is fresh food. Food is really very disappointing at Omni. I do not know how the other hotels are there but by American standards, it's really poor.
The Omni also has a chief concierge whose name is M. Gonzalez and she is unfortunately not all that helpful. She talks with a condescending tone and Omni would really do better to not have her. I unfortunately had lost my glasses in the ocean early on in my stay, we asked M. Gonzalez about how to go to Costco and she tried instead to lure us to go to a local shop. When we asked her to call Costco to check for us if they made glasses in one hour, she refused to do so saying she shops there and she knows, thus unnecessary to call there. When we got to Costco, we found out it takes them 2 weeks. I ended up with contacts which they did have. She is a concierge, she should be working to help the hotel guests, she is not there to be arrogant because she is the Chief concierge. Also, they were quite lacking in detailed info, they could not tell you much more than what was in the brochures about different destinations.
Someone did mention about mildew/mold smell and sure enough, one of our rooms smelled of it.
The kiddie pool was always dirty, day after day with all kinds of things floating around in it.
Overall, a good experience but not one I would go back for. Also, the vacation club is really time share and they come at you just like a used car dealer with a big push, don't believe it when they tell you no hassles, just a 90 minute presentation.
I hear the place to really go is the Rivera Maya, south of Cancun.
Good luck.

First off let me say that the best part of staying at the omni is the horror stories you will get to share with your friends and family when you get back. As with other reviews contrary to the photos you will see online the beach is useless nothing but rocks and they always have a red flag up(which means no swimming). If you look at the website and see that they have beds on the beach and think they looks good you will be greatly disappointed as the angle of the photo is not even possible due to the lack of beach instead you will find a dirty blue mattress on one of these frames shoved up against the wall. Also the stores down by the beach section are always closed. If you are looking for variety in eating options guess what you dont have any! There are 2 places to eat and the one by the beach is only open for breakfast. The worst part of the stay however was the staff they are the most unfriendly and least helpful people I have ever met. Clearly if you cant get a job in tourism elsewhere you go with the rest of the throwbacks to the omni. When I checked in I was given the keys and that was it. No map of the place, no go down the hall to the left for the elevators no nothing just 2 keys. It only took a second to find out why as someone else came up to me with a map trying to pitch me a timeshare. It is disgusting that even to find your room the hotel sicks one of these bottom feeders on you. After multiple times saying I just flew in and am not interested in a free breakfast and a presentation I was finally told how to get to my room. The next issue came the 3rd time I went to the spa. I was asked to sign in the 3rd time I went to use the treadmill which was new to me. I signed in then 15 minutes later they came to tell me they were going to charge me 20 dollars for the use of the treadmill for my wife and myself. If I was told upon sign in that I would be charged a fee all of a sudden that would be one thing but to let me begin my workout and then tell me while I am running was irritating. My wife signed the paper and wrote she did not agree with the charges so the manager came down and told us that if we had some document on us that said they should not charge us show it to her. After letting her know that we dont carry travel documents to the gym we left frustrated and in disbelief at the lack of customer service and the stupidest question I have been asked in a while. The next issue was breakfast where my wife ordered an egg white vegetable omelet and I ordered Waffles. My wife got her food and about 15 minutes later they finally brought mine. If your intent is to eat together be prepared to not eat at the same time. The fourth was the fact that neither the front counter or the concierge were willing to break a 500 peso bill. The fifth was when I asked for a late checkout the night before departue since the shuttle for the airport was picking us up at 2:30 for the airport and checkout was noon. And was told to call back the next day when I would be leaving. When I called back after being transferred 3 times I was told that for 40 us dollars I could stay till 2:00 pm. The sixth was when I went to check my luggage with the bellman they just put a tag on your stuff and leave it in the lobby. They even tried to give me the wrong luggage when I went to pick it up. Overall the facility itself is average compared to every other hotel in cancun but the staff is the worst I have ever encountered.

We just returned from the Omni hotel, (at least 1/2 dozens stays there now over as many years) and the hotel, staff, spectacular view, food, service continues to be the best we have experienced. The reason we continue to stay there.
Plenty of activities for kids, young and old, as well as young and older adults. ...take advantage of the Happy Hour...or if all inclusive, you already have a great thing going.
Breakfast at the Pina Colada a must, and a dinner at DiVinci's too...and well done on the nightly theme and entertainment dinning.
Pool activities throughout the day keep you entertained, and vary by day of week...volleyball, basketball, trivia, water arobics (no cost)
Had maid service twice daily, big clean then a late afternoon/early evening freshing up. Housekeeping was on point within 5 to 10 minutes for additional towels/amenities.
Prices continue to be reasonable...great price on the junior suites with the carribean view...room service prices are very reasonable...just overall best bang for the buck.
Accessible to anywhere in the hotel zone by bus, pick up at the hotel, 6.5 pesos...if need a cab, right there within 1 minute...and great gym...don't forget to grab a message.
Beach view/area/amenities are spectacular for relaxing.
Check it out, you will not be disappointed and bet you will return.
