Disappointing stay

We stayed at the Campanile Paris x for one night on our way back from the Campanile Gard Part Dieu in Lyons - an excellent hotel.
By contrast this Campanile is very disappointing. The distance from the Gare du Nord is greater than one might expect from the description and would be onerous to walk with heavy luggage. In reality it is nearer to the Gare de l'Est.
We were allocated a room which was not clean - even though we did not arrive until 4pm.- only the bed had been prepared. Dirty cups, tea tray and work surface, hair in the plug holes of the sink and shower unit, no clean towels, no tea, sugar etc in the room and no toiletries and all this on only a cursory inspection! We complained and were told to leave our luggage and come back when the housekeeper had put things right. We were tired and refused and asked for another room. No apology was given. The replacement was fine - clean and tidy, so why were we not given this room initially?
There was a great deal of noise inside the hotel - loud conversation, drunken singing until midnight - no attempt made by the security staff to solve the problem. Also much noise from outside, although this is not surprising given the situation in a busy city centre. The area is cosmopolitan, but seemingly safe.
Breakfast was adequate, but basic. There was no 'normal' tea - only fruit and flavoured, although after a discussion, some did arrive. The hot water was luke warm and did not make for a good cuppa!
There is a small garden at the rear which is a pleasant addition, and breakfast can be taken outside in good weather.
Rooms advertised at 115 euros a night, excluding breakfast, seem overpriced for a budget hotel, even by Paris price standards.
We shall not be staying here again - there are better and quieter hotels nearby.

The hotel is 10 - 15 mins from Gard de Nord but closer to Gard de L'est. It is on a busy corner opposit Louis Blanc metro station which is handy. The area is respectable working class area and very French including a good selection of food shops. I found the reception very friendly and efficient but the one lift was rather slow. The room was up to standard with all the usual services, including coffee making facillities which are not very usual in 2 star hotels in Paris. There was also a half bath and shower.
Despite comments by others I found the breakfast with more choice than is usual in 2 star hotels but as I was always down to breakfast early I perhaps saw it at its best. My only complaint about this hotel is the noise from police sirens, I would suggest that an investment in efficient double/triple glazing would enhance the quality of this attractive hotel.

This hotel is on a very busy corner and even on the 5th floor we could not sleep despite earplugs. We even heard the police sirens at 4am. The very small bathroom had nowhere to put a toiletries bag; it would be a good idea for a member of staff to spend a night in the room to see just how difficult things like that can be.They provide a kettle but are so hard up they can manage only 2 teabags one of which is a minted flavour. The hotel is looking jaded and in need of new carpets and curtains.
The reception staff are totally impersonal and the breakfast is very basic. There seems to be only one member of staff there and although she works hard, most of the time there are things not available such as no cups or no milk. There is only one thing in its favour and that is its closeness to Gare du Nord and Eurostar and to Louis Blanc metro, but the metro ride from places like Eiffel Tower is a long one. There must be better places than this to stay, away from so much traffic noise.

We never leave valuable stuff unlocked in the hotel room. However, my lesson from this stay is to never leave anything on the table that could be also usefull for other people.
We would have gone back for the next time if it weren't for the bad service after something got stolen from our room.
In general: the hotelroom was clean, neat and convenient. Too bad there was a deep big dent in the matras which led to pain in the back after 2 nights. The breakfast was quite luxurious compared to what I had imaged as petite. The metro stop "Louis Blanc" was just across the street which was perfect.
One day, when we went out and put the key in the box, one of the ladies collected the keys and asked me which room I was. I answered, quite flustered because they usually don't ask and it shouldn't matter right? Anyway, that night when we came back I could not find my new big bottle of body milk (worth 26 euro's) which was in my toiletbag. So I reported it to the night reception and he took note of it.
The next morning the sous directrice said harshly to me:"NO, it was NOT stolen. Because in this hotel never gets stolen." Then she told me to ask the cleaning lady myself and ordered her to search the room with me. The cleaning lady even checked all our bags without asking which was quite rude but I could understand her stress since she would be the first suspect in others eyes. I believe her though, poor lady. She even went throught the garbage of that day to see whether it might have accidentally dropped into a garbage-bag. But there are 3 keys to the room and I still suspect the lady who asked which room I stayed in that morning. She was not there and the result would have been the same anyway. And it was not easy to explain stuff to a lady who did not believe me
After 2 hours of searching and communicating. The sous directrice asked me to write a letter what, when happened and a request for refund. Then she offered to send me a cheque if I could fax her the receipt. So, I did when I was back home. However, this has been a few weeks ago and I haven't hear anything from them. I understand it is not a Hotel policy to refund anything that get "lost' in the hotel. But then again she shouldn't have promised me anything then. Besides, searching through the bags of guests isn't quite a hotels policy either. We are obviously not that type of people who would make up a lie to earn 26 euro's while staying for a week in Paris. But it's just so unexpected and unfair that even lotions would get stolen. I'm sure it was a woman.
