We stayed in the Copthorne Lakefront Hotel last week- 25 April -1st May and were extremely happy with our experience. We paid an upgrade of $22 for a lake view and I guess we were upgraded to a suite- our room was beautiful. King size bed, spa bath beautiful living area and balcony facing lake as well as extra toilet. All for $127NZ per night.
The service was great-we only had one breakfast in restaurant which was the standard really for that type of hotel. We did find the restaurant a little cold. More heating there would be a good thing.
We ordered room service breakfast one morning and that was great.
We used the bar one night- good pices on cocktails and snacks were good standard.
The staff were very friendly and we found the service to be professional.
The standard of cleaning in our suite was of very high standard.
After staying in a so called 5 star hotel in Sydney this was so much better by comparison. I would recommend this hotel to all my friends.
The location was great- just a few minutes walk to main centre, which is down a little hill, but we are talking mountain area.
The views were magnificent and Queenstown has lots to do.

We stayed at the Copthorne Resort Lakefront for 3 days in a Superior Lakeview Room. Getting to the room from the lobby was an adventure in itself! we were in room 1353 and to get there from the lobby you had to walk down a hallway to an elevator in Building 1, go down to 3rd floor (Lobby is on 5th floor.. go figure), walk another length of hallway.. turn right and walk down still another hallway to our room. The view of the lake though was worth it. We had a nice view out of the room of the lake.
The room we were in did not have an air conditioner but thankfully we did not need it as the windows would open wide and let the cool air in off the lake.
The staff went above and beyond to accomidate us in making plans for dinner, calling a taxi, calling and confirming our tours, etc. Everything we needed was taken care of instantly! Once they found out what our plans would be, they gave us coupons for money off the venues we were going.
The Hotel is located on top of a steep hill from downtown and is only a 5 minute walk to downtown. If you go through the park it is not as steep a grade than the road.
If you like to get a bit of exercise when staying at a hotel then this is the perfect place to stay. Lots of lovely walks thru the park is only a few minutes away and you can walk around the lake on the loop trail.

two dead lightbulbs and a broken fridge?

On the whole it's an ok hotel which is near (5 mins walk) to the centre of Queenstown. We just encountered a series of little faults which on their own didn't amount to much, but in combination...
When we arrived we found that one lightbulb in the bathroom and one bedlamp were already blown, so we contacted reception about that. The fridge was also broken so we told reception about that as well - they swapped out the entire fridge while we were out.
The reception computer system crashed while we were checking out, and we had to wait about 15 minutes for the computer to restart. There was a tour group checking in at the same time, so the lobby was very crowded.
We didn't have a lake view, but then again we only ordered a "standard" room, and didn't specifically request or expect a view. Apart from the broken things (little things really) it all was ok.
The view from the upstairs bar is gorgeous. We only had one meal (breakfast) at the restaurant. The next day we just went to a cafe downtown.
The staff and especially the concierge were very helpful, and any problems we did find were very quickly rectified.
At the same time though, I don't know what to put the problems we encountered down to. For example, one would think that the minibar servicing people would notice if a fridge was broken, and would contact maintenance to get it fixed. Similarly, one would think that housekeeping would notice broken lightbulbs and would get them fixed. I could be charitable and suggest that maybe the various breakages occured between different occupancies in the hotel room. Two other less charitable interpretations are that either there's no sense of pride in the hotel by the staff, or that hotel management are tight and won't spend money unless guests themselves notice problems.
In any case, I don't know if the problems we encountered were just one-off bad luck events, or whether they are a regular occurrence.
I'll be generous and say that we probably struck an off-day for this place. I'd probably stay at this hotel again.
