We were so disapointed at this hotel! We came for my birthday mid-week and had a really bad time. I saw that someone else mentioned the musty, moldy smell and that is exactly what it was. Everything was cheaply done and just seemed old. We were supposed to have a pool view but there was an enormous tree blocking it completely. The floor was slightly damp and the air conditioner wasn't working properly. We asked to be moved to another room and the manager said he could move us but we would have to pay. I couldn't believe what was going on! They didn't even care the slightest bit that we were unhappy guests and I was polite about it too! So, after moving rooms I was so unhappy that I called over at the Valley Ho since we had stayed there before. I wanted to see if we could just cancel our reservations at Mondrian and go over there. As I'm on the phone with the girl from Valley Ho I look down and notice that there is black paint on my legs and hands! The room had just been freshly painted! All we got for our troubles was a plate of cookies and milk which I found to be insulting since I am not a child!

Wow, where do I begin? I wanted to stay at a resort, but my bid was too low... So I got the MONDRAIN. We planned to take some photos on the property, do some people watching, use the pool, and visit some of the Scottsdale shops in the area. We arrived late in the evening Friday. Got checked in quickly, by two wonderful front desk employees.
The valet was friendly and helpful. We found our room easily.
It was on the top floor of three. The rooms were a bit surprising.
They are older, smaller and not much room, compared to what
you could get at the Orange Tree golf resort for the same price...
Nicely situated to many of the best things in Scottsdale historic shopping area, several clubs, shopping mall and library. The rooms area neat, they have white and black decor with lucite chair and bed side table. There is a cool lounger chair and footstool, and long fringe hangs from the tv and writing desk bar. Huge flat screen tv, and a variety of goodies in the over stuffed fridge.
The room was clean, and the linens were super white. The bed is on a platform, that was really suckie, as we almost killed our selves on it a few times in the middle of the night.
The pool was in a great location, we could see it from the window, and walk to it quickly. They have cabana like cubicle beds, lots of loungers, a bar, and there is even music underwater.
BAD PART.... well the Air Conditioning unit is like an air plane ascending and descending. REALLY REALLY LOUD! The rooms are not super cold either...for all that noise they should be like the arctic. BAD news... no ice machine that was convenient. The walls are very thin, so much so you can hear drunk club goers clopping their way down the hallway all hours of the night and morning.
The bathrooms are very small, and there is no vanity or counter top. There is however a nice mirror to magnify so you can apply your face while standing and putting your gear in the sink!
We did not go watch the plastic people as we saw enough to get our fill when we checked in.....
OK so now to the ranting part,. we were wanting to take pictures on the property. i brought some swimsuits and a few nice dress
and we hit the pool at 7 am to shoot. We were OUTTED by a security guard saying we needed permission to take the pics.
I went to the front desk manager, and was told as long as they are for private use they were ok... so we tried to shoot a few more, and another employee told us we had to stop, now he says we need written permission from corporate. WHAT? Who get s permission to shoot pictures when they are on vacation?
(it should not matter what type of camera you are using, if you are a paying customer, you should be allowed to photograph whatever you want)
THE ONLY REASON WE CAME HERE WAS TO DO PHOTOS!
That being said, we are waiting for a response from both corporate and the local management.
the property is like its shown on the website, just not so glossy!

Its disappointing to see the bad reviews. This hotel requires a second look. We stayed for three evenings. The front desk staff and concierge were very helpful. They suggested where to dine, rented vehicles, and circled must sees on maps. Okay, so they took an old property and gave it a face lift. Bravo!!! We had a nice private patio with gorgeous plants. The grounds were impeccably maintained with staff removing dead leaves from plants and lighting candles in the evenings. Yes there were a lot of young people, but also 40 somethings who wanted to stay in a great location which is close to Old Town, shopping and nightclubs. The rooms were as advertised, black and white themed, but they have balconies and loungers, and are comfortable for the amount of time you spend in them. Asia de Cuba served up a very nice dinner and the atmosphere was laid back.

This place could have been cool but it wasn't. The rooms we like poorly renovated rooms from a bad Motel 6. Very small, musty smell, chipped and dirty walls, etc. If the rooms weren't so horrible it wouldn't have been such a bad place but for the price I would definitely not stay there again.

Despite reading the reviews, I too fell foul of "it's a Mondrain" syndrome, it must be good, right? Wrong. 3 SLEEPLESS nights and an endless list of issues.
Firstly, don't book your stay through the Mondrian's online system. By their own admission some of the bookings don't materialise, as ours didn't, which then leaves you at the mercy of on-the-spot availability. We ended up in a lower standard room than we had booked, with the only saving grace being we paid less for this appalling hotel.
If you want a relaxing break do NOT stay here. The pool is lovely, but there are no loungers available in the evenings or at weekends becasue non-guests descend on the hotel in their hundreds. We asked if they were non-guests and why there were allowed to be there at our expense and were told definitively "no", but when we asked a couple of the invaders themselves our suspicions were confirmed. Apparently there's a guestlist for outsiders and you just call to get on it. Lots do.
It was suggested to us that we might like to use the quieter pool around the corner, frankly it was the size of large beach towel and full of other "grown ups" looking equally aggravated at having to be relegated to this place in order to be able to read a book.
So, how could I describe the experience: well, Spring Break revisited. Club 18-30 for you Europeans. Oh, there were 3 hen/bachelorette party's in full swing too. It's appalling.....everyone is (or acts) 18-25 years old, all permanently drunk, all permanently shouting, all permanently on the pull (this might, I realise, sound appealing to some!!). Late Saturday afternoon we were greeted by impromptu swimming races....as one of the contestants was from overseas we had to endure 20 minutes of U-S-A chanting...I have no issue with this, other than this is a hotel pool in Scottsdale, not Majorca in the 1980s. Furthermore, we were woken in the middle of the night on ALL 3 nights by these same drunken revellers returning to their rooms, or perhaps to someone else's room. Nice.
Ah, and then there's the nice chap at the entrance of the pool area who checks ID and won't let you in if you don't have something he finds acceptable. Remember, I am a guest of the hotel and in my mid-30s. Because I'm British and refuse to carry a paasport to the pool (passport + water = trip to embassy!!) he didn't find my Government issued driving licence acceptable. Fast forward 10 minutes of arguing to his priceless "if it's not issued by the Government of the U-nited States of A-merica then I'm not accepting it. Passport or no entry". Hmm, what happened that world renowned American customer service....?
Beyond these issues the rooms were, as suggested elsewhere, "like a converted Motel 6". However, interiors were nice, but small, and with a propensity to injure yourself on the bed surround. Asia de Cuba was indeed excellent and Alison on the front desk very attentive and pleasant.
One last gripe: $5.95 per 15 minutes on the internet. If you're the Mondrian why bother? It just makes you look cheap and adds further insult to injury for disgruntled guests.
All told, an horrific stay on so many levels. Will not go back. Suggest Mondrian Group take a serious look before this hotel undermines a lot of good work the rest of the chain have done.
