LOCATION is Perfect , there is nothing to do at Cologne, weekend is more then enough. The hotel is very nice and frond desk also, nice bar , TVs in the rooms and around the hotel is good. Very Small bathroom and very small beds. Water was sometimes cold sometimes too hot, couldn’t’ take a normal shower.

We lamented for days over which hotel to stay at for our brief stay in Cologne. We debated between the Sofitel near the Conference center which was considerably cheaper but a bit away (over the bridge), and then the Excelsior was just a bit more expensive. For our short weekend stay in Jan 2008, the location couldnt be better--perfectly located right near the Dom Cathedral and the train station and just minutes from the Rhein river, the Ludwig museum, the good restaurants including Fruh am Dom, and cool Breweries/ pubs serving kolsch and great shopping.
The hotel receptionists were very courteous and super efficient, the concierge had great advice about where to eat/ what to do, and even the house keeping staff were great. The hotel restaurant / bar was convenient and --for a night cap or a quick coffee. The room was a good size--ours had a view of the Fruh am dom restaurant though our bathroom window overlooked the Dom (apparently only the executive suites have views of the Cathedral). As for the Dom bells ringing at night--it seemed like they reduced the volume on the chimes or stopped it...it didnt affect my sleep.

In town for one night and we loved the Dom Hotel -- charming and elegant without being pretentious. Booked it as part of the Starwood chain (used points and cash). Quick walk from the train station and adjacent to the Cathedral. Staff was professional and friendly, even during the uique craziness of Cologne Carnival. Concierge provided excellent restaurant suggestions. Would definitely return.

Really Nice Stay

We had a lovely room with a view of the Cathedral. The room was very comfortable and the bathroom was clean. We only stayed for two nights right after the holidays and were given a very nice holiday gift by the hotel - some slippers and a cake. It can be a little stuffy but is an elegant hotel perfect for a short luxurious splurge.

I last visited Cologne in the early 1980`s and remembered a lovely City that I thought my wife would enjoy. The Christmas markets were an added attraction.
We chose the Dom Hotel for it`s location and based on good Trip Advisor reports. On arrival we were warmly and efficiently received by the reception staff. We declined the offer of paying extra for a room upgrade but were then upgraded anyway to an Executive Suite at no extra cost. What a start!
The Suite looked into an inner courtyard which was fine as there was absolutely no road noise and you could see the top half of the Cathedral next door. The suite comprised a large sitting area, good double bedroom and en suite marbled bathroom.
The Hotel faces a large square and is very close to Cafe`s, Restaurants and Shops. It is clean, comfortable, very nicely decorated and staff are helpful and friendly.
The Dining room is large and comfortable with a "call order" service for breakfast and varied buffet. Staff are efficient although a bit formal. There was one slightly odd moment during one breakfast when a delivery trolley was wheeled through the Restaurant to the Kitchen somewhat detracting from the splendid ambience. We did not have Dinner in the Restaurant but it was always well patronised and popular in the evenings.
We would certainly stay at the Dom Hotel again.
Do go and eat at Restaurant "Em Krutzche" for wonderful traditional German food. The Hotel Concierge will book a table and provide directions. It is located on the river frontage and within reasonable walking distance of the Hotel.
The Hop On, Hop Off bus is a great way to get a sense of the scale and layout of the City, do visit the Chocolate Museum ( The Cafe overlooks the Rhine) and of course do not forget the Cathedral.
My wife loved Cologne. Wonderful City, Wonderful trip.
