Arrived in the evening after long flight from the UK. Check in was smooth and was given $25 gift card for reserving my stay using my Marriott credit card.
Room was typical Marriott style, clean and very comfortable with a great bed and nice furnishings. Not entirely sure about the work desk arrangement although it was good that it didn't take up masses of space in the room. Bathroom is very small but functional with decent shower and bath products.
Pool area roof opens in the summer. Starbucks in the lobby area is useful if you don't want a sit down breakfast. The buffet breakfast didn't run every day so I used 'bucks for a bagel and coffee most days. Avoid the bar, $10 for a Corona is exorbitant especially when there are two awesome brewpubs within 10 minutes walking distance (Red Rock and Squatters) much more reasonably priced. Valet parking was $15 a day and reasonably priced and very prompt.
On the 14th floor looking north, had a nice view of the Capitol building and the Mormon Temple. Location overall is awesome with the Gateway mall and theatre megaplex 3 blocks away and many good restaurants within a 4 block radius.
Only issue with the hotel is the construction being carried out to the North side of the hotel. A mall is being developed and work starts VERY early (before 6am) and finished around 7pm so there is constant noise during the day. If noise doesn't bother you then fine however, it may be worth asking for a south facing room or avoiding the hotel entirely until the construction is complete.

Since the Inn at Temple Square closed in 2006, I've stayed at the Marriott and the Hilton. I'm at the Gold level in the Hilton frequent stay program, but the Marriott is my first choice in Salt Lake. Rooms are clean and well-appointed (love the bedding), the views can't be beat, and the staff is the most helpful and friendly I've seen anywhere. The proximity to the Family History Library and Temple Square (and the Conference Center) is a big plus.
As others posted, construction is going on next door. The noise was definitely not bad when I was there. I did get up early and go to bed late, which may have made a difference.

Stayed at the Marriott Salt Lake City Downtown in early June of 2008. As the name implies, this hotel is downtown and located adjacent to the Salt Palace Convention Center and the LDS Temple Square. I have been to Marriott hotels all around the world and stay at Marriott’s for one reason: consistency. I usually know what I am going to get and there are, generally, few surprises. And that’s precisely what we have here. This is your typical Marriott property. My room (14th floor) had a beautiful view of the mountains. There is a Starbucks located in the lobby for you coffee junkies like me. The staff at the front desk, pool side (2nd floor), and concierge lounge (16th floor) are all very friendly. The property and rooms are well kept and clean. The fitness rooms (2nd floor) are a bit odd in that the free weights are located outside near the pool and they are a bit old/rusty as you might imagine being somewhat exposed to the elements. The ellipticals and treadmills, however, are located indoors adjacent to the pool and are quite nice and modern. I can confirm what other reviewers have said: you will get a 0700 wake-up call via the construction near the LDS Temple Square. There’s plenty of construction going on there and it looks like they’ll be at it for many months to come. If you’re an earlier riser like me then it won’t be a problem (so as not to scare you, it really isn’t that loud).
Plenty of nice restaurants with a five minute walk from the hotel: Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill, PF Chang’s, and several fancier restaurants on Market Street (about three clocks South). I ate at Squatter’s micro-brewery which is right across the street from PF Chang’s. They have a diverse menu for both food and beer (we had buffalo hamburgers, Chili Colorado, etc.). I can highly recommend this restaurant.
All in all this is a very nice hotel to stay in if you need a place to stay in downtown Salt Lake City.

We had a room on the top floor due to an upgrade. We also had a bottle of champagne. Our bed was super comfy. The executive lounge was wonderful and the staff was excellent.
The only bad was the construction next door that started at 7 am each morning, but the location was close to tons of restaurants and bars within walking distance.
Great lobby and I even took my kids to the pool which was above average with their gardens and skylights.

Stayed here for a meeting & was overall well-pleased. Standout feature was a uniformly helpful & courteous staff. Excellent gym & pool. Internet worked well & the $9.95 daily fee also covered local & long-distance calls, a relative bargain. Very close to the Salt Palace & other attractions. Clean & reasonably quiet. Will stay again on my next trip.
