Good location, good staff
Guest name: sim0ns, Belfast
Stayed there for 7 nights in July 08. Well located on Mandela Square in Sandton so plenty of restaurants around. Indian and Thai next door both good but highest recommendation goes to Butcher Shop on the square. Top class.
Staff are good but sometimes try a bit too hard (presentation of breakfast involves 1-2-3 Voila!).
Rooms are good size, as are bathrooms.
If staying on business, internet access isn't great. Other minor problem was that I had emailed asking for an early checkin. No one bothered to reply and needless to say I had to wait a couple of hours before getting checked in, although they did give me access to a changing room with shower.
Would happily stay again and recommend to anyone.

We had a superb stay at the Michaelangelo which is a very classy hotel in a more timeless style - think chintz, heavy brocade, gilty mirrors etc. The location is perfect - the hotel is right in Nelson Mandela Square which is alive with cafes and people and is surrounded by probably the best shopping I've seen in a while (especially with the aussie dollar against the rand!). We felt totally safe, obviously didn't take needless risks but safety just wasn't an issue. The hotel facilities were good - a nice inside heated pool, a half decent gym, a choice of restaurants and a good concerierge desk for booking tours, taxis etc. We ate at the restuarnt for breakfast a couple of times and had the worlds best omelette there, actually the food right through Sth Africa was really impressive. My husband had what he called his best steak in his life at The Meat Butcher (?) in Nelson Mandela Square. The rooms were very comfortable and the service explemplary, almost overboard but totally genuine. Do try and tip the staff generously - they're worth it, and ask them questions, they're locals and proud of it. One porter spotted my Nelson Mandela Book and started proudly chanting "Mandeba" with his fist raised - now you don't get that at any mainstream hotel chain! We did an organised Soweto/city tour through the hotel, just me, my husband and a soweto local driving our van, Victor. What an amazing experience. I don't think you can appreciate Africa without understand where it's come from - and what a positive place Soweto was - obviously the housing was what you'd expect, but it had a good vibe, felt safe, and people are just getting on with their lives. We also visited the Rosebank Sunday rooftop markets with a taxi waiting for us, which is a good option for arts and crafts stuff. Jo'burg is a big city and takes a while to get around places, but we loved it, and even though we were only there for 3 nights, I'd go back in a heart beat...and i'd definitely stay at The Michelangelo again!
ps just a small niggle - sound did seem to carry through the air con vents

The reason why I am giving this hotel an above average rating is not because of how the hotel and its service is but because of its superb location. It is situated between the convention center, lively malls and great restaurants. The area is also quite safe and the people are very nice. However, the hotel itself is not up to that rating. It is an average hotel, true the rooms are nicely and elegantly furnished but it is quite old and a bit dusty. The layout of the room is well put and spacious. The room service is good, they prepare your bed at night and you have your own coffee maker in the room. The room thay gave me was at the end of the hotel, so I suppose no one stayed in it for some while, the coffee creamer was evaporated and old, the electricity outlets were not working and they weren't able to fix it in the 4 days I was staying in. I had to use the shaver's electricity outlet in the bathroom to charge my phone. The hotel foyer was pleasent, the staff were nice but the breakfast is not something to speak of. Check-in/Check-out and Concierge staff are superb and very helpful.

Great hotel, but not for non-smokers.
Guest name: cyberanto, Montreal
The hotel is honestly very nice! But I chose a non-smoking room, and the guest in the room next to mine was chain smoking even though we were on a non-smoking floor. He was suffering from jet lag probably because he smoked all night and I could smell every cigarette because it was coming through the linking doors.
I complained four times and nothing was done. The fifth time I spoke to the manager himself. He told me that there is nothing that he can do, if the guest chose to smoke in a non-smoking room, they could not stop him.
I didn't insist, but it surely ruined my stay there. I could only imagine the person that would take the neighbour room right after the chain-smoker has left!
AMAZING, Everything you need in one place!
