A few of my friends and I decided to do a weekend getaway stay in Santa Barbara - and I decided to try out the Canary hotel. The hotel is part of ETC. hotels - which also owns Shutters on the Beach and Casa del Mar in Santa Monica which are also amazing hotels. First off, the hotel is situated in the best possible location in the heart of downtown SB by State Street. You cannot beat the location! Secondly, this hotel has great service - from the moment we got there - we felt taken care of - the bellmen, concierge, to the front desk team - to the restaurant - they were all super friendly, nice and very accommodating. The set-up of the hotel is beautiful - it's very romantic and well designed - stunning in every way - from the lobby to the floors to each of the hotel rooms. The hotel has been completely remodeled (formerly the Andalucia) - but is more upscale. Everything about the Canary is luxurious - the perfect getaway to relax and unwind. We loved the special touches - you can tell they've thought everything through! The beds were super comfy - we slept like babies - and the bathrooms were spacious and nice. They have an amazing rainfall shower head and each bathroom has a small flatscreen tv - which was great. The hotel offers binoculars and a guide to a walking tour around the city and it's historic spots. We really liked how the hotel was not too big - and you could get around easily. The rooftop bar with pool & jacuzzi is awesome - if you make it up there to relax! They have a great drink/food menu - and offer cozy lounge chairs to lay out and unwind. We tried Sunday brunch which was again, fantastic. All of us enjoyed and the restaurant service was excellent. Nightlife and daytime shopping is all within walking distance from the hotel - which is truly wonderful. We didn't have to take a cab anywhere or need to drive our cars. All around - I would say each and every one of us would return in a heartbeat - and if you have an opportunity to go to Santa Barbara - stay at the Canary! It's a great time!

The rooms are really fresh with amazing beds. Haven't slept so good in a long time at a hotel. If you wanna be close to good restaurants and nice shopping, as well not too far from the beach The Canary Hotel has a good location. It's a nice pool area on the rooftop overlooking town.

Stayed here for one night and had a good experience. Loved the decor and bathrooms were large.
The restaurant had fairly decent food but a little pricey. The bar was a nice gathering place and enjoyed the atmosphere.
Overall, it was a nice hotel and I would go back.

I live in Santa Barbara and I'm writing on behalf of my friends who have stayed at the Canary and my own personal experience attending a business conference there for a local software company. I was told that we could valet park by conference organizers, but when I pulled up, the valet asked if I was checking in and I told them I was here for the conference.. and he said, "sorry, you have to park in the city lot next door". After 15 minutes, I parked and walked back to the hotel. (I later found out that some others at the conference parked there). At the front desk, the one person working was on the phone... for at least the 10 minutes I waited. Someone else arrived behind the desk, checked the computer, then walked away without looking up to see me waiting there. I then tried to get to the roof deck, but the elevator needed an access code. I got off on the floor just below the roof (per the instructions of the staff member on the elevator with me). I was then stuck... and had to walk down the emergency exit stairs 12 or so floors back down to the street level...I figured he was new, but it was still irritating. Next, I invited about 10 of my high-profile clients attending the conference to drinks to the bar at around 5 p.m. Although we were the ONLY ones there, we were still given alot of attitude. We could not sit in the seats and it seemed like we were frowned upon for even being there - disturbing there moment of having nobody to serve. We were eventually seated in our own private room, accommodating about 20, which was very nice. I thought things were turning around because our group now had drinks and having a good time. Unforutunately, the waiter came at exactly 6pm to ask me if I wanted to sign out. He assumed that I wanted to sign out right away so we could go for drinks at the rooftop bar, but I preferred my guests to decide when they wanted to move venues. I found it very rude for the waiter to assume we wanted to sign out. We then went to the rooftop event which had it's own issues.
I could go on and on, but let me just say that my friends and I thought this hotel was really nice... once you get in the room and close the curtains... but the staff was extremely over the top pretentious in every way. If you want a hotel room on noisy side streets, overlooking the Santa Barbara Greyhound bus station and construction for a Condo complex on the other side, and staff who know in their minds that they are way better than you, then this is your perfect hotel.
This may be a great place for certain / pretentious people. I only recommend that you search around before booking here as there are many amazing places in SB that give more of the high-end SB experience, such as the DoubleTree Resort or the 4 Seasons. You're dollars are better spent at a real resort than this converted 1960 office buidling trying to be a high end resort.

We spent 2 nights in late April at this wonderful hotel. It is centrally located in beautiful downtown Santa Barbara, within close walking distance of the courthouse, shopping and many great restaurants. It is beautifully renovated, has excellent amenities and the staff is very friendly and attentive. The hotel is very charming and really gives you a unique European experience. We will be back.
