Not sure I entirely agree with the more negative reviews but I would have to say that I was alittle disappointed with our short stay at the Martinez. To me it just didn't feel special enough for the substantial cost. A ?400 room should feel special.
The staff were fine, perhaps abit snooty but they were attentive. Our room was immaculate though I didn't care for the style but of course that is subjective. Food was very nice but too expensive so we ate out all the time and enjoyed doing so!
Basically a decent enough hotel but poor value for money and a slightly souless experience.

We stayed at The Martinez a little while ago and decided (felt compelled even) to write my very first review having stayed in a great many hotels over the years.
Although I was very much a business visitor to Cannes I expected the Martinez to be more than just a 'Business Venue,' having heard so much about the place, it's history and perceived quality. I was disappointed generally, I somehow 'missed' what the place was about and what it was meant to stand for; it certainly wasn't French in any way.....and that's a bad thing. French IS good. The interior design has no coherence with all sorts of differing styles and colours vying to be noticed. In some ways it reminded me of an up-market Travel Lodge from the early eighties or conference centre. The place lacks warmth.
Some of the staff try quite hard, try to smile, others seem to be just 'moving through'; but generally they seem to display an air of superioty - sadly misfounded. In the best places staff can be there when needed but invisible when not, and never ever more 'important' than the guests.
Why do some hotels think that by displaying the best [customers] cars at the front lobby, it somehow makes them a better hotel? Or is it just a way of trying to impress? Doesn't work for me. If my salad is a poor salad it will be just as poor even if a Bugatti is parked twenty feet away. Oh and that salad will be mighty expensive too!
The room was fine but over-priced, even for a corporate business user - we are now in a new era. Nice bathrooms. Most of my colleagues objected to paying extra for everything other than the room and over three times more for drinks in comparison to a very smart bar just down the road with a better view!
Breakfasts were quite disorganised affairs and we took them elsewhere; the street cafes are more fun and offer a real taste of France for a fraction of the cost. And hey we even met some folks as well!
Sorry Martinez, I think it's time to re-think your whole game, in my opinion anyway, times are getting harder out there. If you were half the cost what you are doing now would be fine but at these cost levels you're just not good enough and most people we spoke to were in agreement. Next time we are going to seek out a blend of value, French style and reserve and I have no doubt we will find that in Cannes. The city is as wonderful as ever in spite overated hotels.

my family have been going to the martinez a lot for several generations. i think it the hotel where i stayed that was the closest to the beack. it takes, watch in hand, less than 1 minute from the lobby to the beach. great. the hotel is the best location on the frnech riviera. wonderful. the concierge, clef d'or, is excellent. knows cannes better the maire!!!! the restaurant has very complicated dishes but is very delicious! whatever you ask in this hotel you get it and you get it fast. you have to ask to visit the presidential suite. it is known as the most expensive suite in the world i think. wonderful. they do not show it to everyone but you might get lucky. the amenities in this hotel are very well equipped.

Just returned from our 6 night honeymoon stay. Overall the experience was positive.
Good Points: Beautiful hotel in an art deco style. gr8 location. Top service with attentive staff. The private beach is gorgeous and I was in and out of the sandy floored sea more often then an eight year old after a red bull. Room was big, relativly modern with flat screen and grand marble bathroom. Also happily didnt encounter too many obnoxious guests with screaming kids (cud have been just b4 schools let out in Eng/Ire). Also the outdoor bar area is lovely b4 venturing for out dinner.
Bad Points: Staff a little snooty (sometimes I do wonder when a concierge behaves like a Billionare with PMS) . Totally overpriced which is what you find in this part of Cannes, your talking 10 yoyo's a small beer and a main course of beef or duck for about 35 euros (now I wouldnt mind paying this if it was worth it but the quality and size of the food didnt justify its price). In fact the Martinez has every angle covered in grinding out ???, which is gd business, but Im suprised they dont just frisk guests when they arrive. Also the beach bar/ bed staff are like jack russels on heat and salivate at the prospect of decent looking women. Oh and avoid the restaurant Relais Martinez: awful food!
So all in all nothing is perfect but its pretty good if u want maybe a 3 night stay and wont be there long enough to notice the cracks.
