Apathetic staff at Old Stone Inn

When I spend $750 for three nights at a hotel, I expect a certain level of service. If I were to stay at Motel 8, I would expect a totally different sort of experience.
At the Old Stone Inn, I got Motel 8-level service. The staff seemed to not really like guests, their job, or both -- I couldn't figure out why staff was so completely apathetic.
At check in, the only "extra" information I was offered was where the pool was located. They didn't ask if it was our first time in Niagara Falls, if we needed restaurant or attraction information, or even if we needed a map of the area to get around. And when we asked questions, the answer addressed that question and not a bit more.
Staff avoided making eye contact with guests. And when we passed the reception desk for breakfast, staff greeted us only after we'd initiated the "Good morning."
I do realize the hotel is old, and that was part of its appeal to us. We had to go through 5 doors and hallways before finally getting to our rooms -- a difficult feat when you're pulling suitcases. No offer of assistance was given.
The plus sides to the hotel were that it was attractive with a lot of personality (the exterior is off-putting, but it was pleasantly attractive inside); it is in a convenient location (we easily walked to the Falls, the Fallsview Casino, and Victoria Avenue for dining); and restaurant service was good.
While the hotel itself is quaint, it's run by Motel 8-type management and doesn't live up to its exorbitant rates. We moved to the DELIGHTFUL Redwood B&B for 4 nights -- and spent less than our 3 nights at Old Stone Inn.
Skip this place if you expect friendly, welcoming staff that wants to help make your visit more enjoyable.

The facility is lovely. Truly, an old stone inn beautifully decorated common areas. Check in was quick and painless. Asked for a comp. upgrade (as hotel appeared to be half full) but no luck here. Our room was a little small but tastefully decorated. Rich tapestry-like bedding and furnishings. We were on the third floor and had a vaulted ceiling...quite attractive. The bathroom was small but clean. Again, the sink was not in the same room as the tub/shower and toilet. The hallways were quite warm, there was no air conditioning felt until we got to the first floor near the front desk. Pool/hot tub area was clean and well maintained. I was sorry the outside pool wasn't open as they were planning on doing some renovations I think. We ate dinner in the hotel dining room. The atmoshere there was wonderful. If you love being surrounded by antiques, you'll LOVE this dining room. Quite elegant. Food was excellent. Rather pricey but a lovely selection, something you'd expect from this type of establishment.. Service was very good and we enjoyed our evening. As we booked on-line, we were entitled to a "free" breakfast. This I was not empressed with. Breakfast was served where we had eaten dinner the night before. There appeared to be 2 servers working and when we arrived there were only 3 other tables seated. Our server appeared quite harried, rushing about. She sat us, disappeared briefly and reappeared and started to fill our coffee cups without even asking if we wanted coffee or not. She quickly explained what the free breakfast was (she delivered this speech like she had done it 10,000 times before and was extremely bored with it all) the standard: Scrambed eggs, bacon, homefries and toast.
My husband asked if he could have his eggs done differently. This was not a problem. Well, my Mamma always told me you can't ruin eggs. She was wrong!. The eggs were cool, dry and tasteless, the hashbrowns were roasted small whole potatoes that one might get at dinnertime. The only good thing was the toast. I remarked to my husband that I'm glad that I didn't have to pay $12.00 for this breakfast.
Overall, a nice place. It was quiet and appeared to be user friendly.

First, it's across the street from a tattoo parlor, in a run-down part of Niagara Falls. We didn't know that upon booking. But what should have clued us in to management's attitude was their inability, upon booking, to send a confirmation e-mail after repeated requests.
We showed up to find no one at the front desk and no note. I called out a hello, then hollered as loud as I could--nothing. A few minutes passed, and a front-desk clerk emerged from some bathroom somewhere with an annoyed "I was in the bathroom." No "sorry"--just a peeved expression. No bellmen or other staff anywhere, I might add.
The first room we were sent to was next to a hallway door, even though we'd asked for a quiet room. The next room had a stack of beer cans outside room next door, evidently from the previous night's partying. Even though it was past 7 PM.
And you know how hotels ask for your credit card to cover any "incidentals" when you check in? Well, we discovered later that they had authorized more than double the amount of the entire stay.
You can pay only a few dollars more per night at much nicer hotels in the nicer part of Canadian Niagara. Any would be a much better choice.
Total Bummer

I decided to surprise my husband and take him to Niagra Falls as a birthday gift. I read a ton of reviews on this site and did a lot of research to find the best prices. I found a good deal on Orbitz for The Old Stone Inn. I was excited about going.
We got there and check-in went smoothly. The lady at the reception desk was pleasant, but not overly friendly. She told us where to go to get to the elevator. Our room was on the third floor all the way in the back. It was like a maze to first find the elevator and then a zig-zag down a few hallways to find our room. There wasn't an easy way to reach it.
The hallways were stiffling to put it mildly. Especially in the corridors near the pop machines on the third floor. It was like a sauna. My husband and I did notice that there was an exhaust fan in the window, but it wasn't plugged in.
Our room was clean. The bed was comfortable. Our view was of a tree and an empty parking lot in the back. We really didn't care what the view was since we were gone for much of the day. The bathroom was really clean too. There wasn't much to chose from on tv...only a few stations seemed to come in. They did have a good selection of movies that you could rent for $11.99 and up.
We were really disgusted by the pools. The indoor pool looked like it needed a good scrubbing and vacuuming. We checked several times throughout our stay to see if either pool had been cleaned. They weren't. At most, the outdoor pool had been skimmed. The jacuzzi looked nice enough, but my husband was hesitant to use it due to the lack of cleanliness with the pools. We never saw anyone there either. Both places were always empty when we went by.
The location really isn't close to all that much, except for the IMAX. a casino and the Skylon. Be prepared to do a lot of walking or drive nearly everywhere. We decided to hoof it everywhere we went and we literally walked several miles each day.
All in all, if you want a place with a clean room and free parking, this will work for you.
Needless to say, we will not be staying at The Old Stone Inn again.

We use to stay at this hotel many years ago, and then started to try others. We have made our return to THE OLD STONE INN.,and reason being is that it is by far the best hotel in Niagara Falls, for service, dining(I would rate their food a Five Star) and the rooms have been updated as well.
It is is walking distance to everything you would want to see or do in Niagara.
All hotels in this vicinity charge anywhere from $10.00 to more than $20.00 for parking per day. THEY DO NOT CHARGE FOR PARKING!!!
It is not a big hotel only three floors however if you are looking for relaxtion and quiet this is the place for you. Couples love it.
The lounge and dining areas are wonderful and decorated in keeping with the theme of this old flour mill.
It does not have a view of the falls however everything else makes up for it.
We will stay away from the large chain hotels from now on and have come back to our most favourite place in Niagara Falls.
