My partner and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights at the beginning of May 2008. We stayed in room 310 (3rd floor). The room had a queen bed and was a good size for just the two of us. The major issue with this hotel is that you can hear the people in the room next door going to the toilet and taking a shower. The plumbing is very loud and the sound goes right through the walls. We could also hear people moving luggage around in the next room. We didn't hear conversations or anything but the plumbing and moving of items kept me awake for the better part of the two nights that we stayed here. The reason we chose to stay at this hotel is that it was recommended to us by my partner's parents - they said that they had no problems with noise, and that they stayed on level 6. Perhaps it would have ben bettr for us to stay on an upper level and we maybe wouldn't have had so much noise. On the plus side, this hotel is pretty cheap, the rooms are comfortable and they have on-site parking and there is a reasonable Irish pub straight across the road. I would recommend the hotel to someone just travelling through and staying for one night.

We (grandmother, daughter and 7 year old granddaughter) stayed at the Mid City Hotel for two separate nights. For the first night (Friday) the room was small and the decor was dated. We weren't too fussed by that but were extremely disappointed that it wasn't clean. The bathroom had mould on the tiles, the towels were well past their use by date (stained and shredded) and when daughter and granddaughter crawled into bed they found a hairclip! For the second night (Sunday) we had booked a family room. This turned out to be just as bad. It may have been a foot or two longer and had another bed, but the bedspread was ripped and it too was old and tired. As a treat for the granddaughter we ordered room service. After waiting an hour we called again (no answer) and then called reception who told us that during peak times there were delays in the kitchen. Fair enough but couldn't they have told us that when we ordered ("I'm sorry but there will be a delay of 1 hour before you can hope to get your meal. You have also ordered from the childrens menu, be prepared to be nagged until the meal arrives.) Yes, after an hour and 10 minutes the meal did arrive, but it was not freshly prepared. We think it was made in the first 15 minutes and then sat waiting to be delivered for the last 55 minutes. It was cold, overpriced and late. When we discussed this with the hotel, they waived the $4.00 room service fee! Extremely disappointing. Don't waste your money!

I took a tour group to Tassie and we had five nights in this hotel.
It is old and tired and well located like the previous owner stated.
My room was very nice - newly renovated but the bathroom is small. They are doing the hotel up I was told
It is the communal areas that let the hotel down. We had to eat in and the food was terrible the first night. I took everyone out the following night (after many complaints) and when we returned the night after it had improved. Some things were delicious (best seafood chowder and some desserts first class) and others woeful (never have the fish it is always pre battered cheap frozen)
However, in their defence it was very very busy with three big tour groups so they did OK to get us all fed.
The fact that the look of the dining area is so dark and 1970s really affects the way you feel about the place.
If you can get a good rate stay here and have breakfast across the road at the patisserie (looked good) and dinner out.

The only plus point of this hotel is its location - central and easy to walk to most places you might want to visit in Hobart. However, the actual hotel does not appear to have had any attention since it was built and it is quite shabby. Everything looks old and it feels like the place needs an update. Our room was on the front and sleeping with the window open was quite noisy as we could hear the pedestrian crossing beeping and traffic from around 7 in the morning. The room was just ok - I was happy to only be staying one night and wouldn't go back!
