I've read the other reviews, and even checked them before booking, so I was well-informed when I arrived at Quinto Sol. To keep it simple, I will list positives, and then the not-so-positives.
1. Great location, about one block from beach, at the quiet end of 5th Avenue. An easy, 5 minute walk brings you to the hottest area of the Avenue. Small convenience stores are in the immediate area, so you can pick up snacks, beer, sodas, whatever to stock up for a day at the beach, or for your fridge. There is also a huge supermarket up on the main road (about 10 blocks from the hotel), where you can pick up everything from groceries, to beach towels, to basic housewares (we bought a can/bottle opener because the room didn't have one)
2. Lovely white adobe structure. Round walls, colourful tile work, and the outside areas were extremely clean. There is a large tree growing in the middle of the hotel, which adds a lovely ambiance at night when they light it up.
3. Nice outdoor sitting areas on each level, including some sun lounge beds. There is a jet tub, although it's not heated, it's refreshing to sit in at the end of a day at the beach.
4. Rooms are large, air-conditioned and well-ventilated.
5. Free wifi, which these days, I'm finding almost impossible to travel without.
6. Starbucks across the street, as well as several very nice cafes, all with wifi.
7. Staff was wonderful and extremely pleasant without gushing and ingratiating themselves on us.
Things that might bother pickier people:
1. Rooms seemed a bit dark. This could be easily remedied with the placement of two or three more lights. Lighting in the bathroom might be difficult for those who like to spend time grooming or applying make-up (just an observation, but not an issue for us).
2. Dust. I noticed there was quite a bit of dust, more than the usual daily accumulation. Rooms were, otherwise, presentable and not in health-hazard territory.
3. In our room, the stove top didn't work very well. It took almost an hour to heat a pan of water to make luke-warm instant coffee. Thank heavens for Starbucks!
4. Small hard pillows. But we managed! :)
5. There was noise. Some from the adjacent rooms, some from the cafes in the street. This is a late night town. People seem to head out after 9:00 PM and stay out until the wee hours. If you need absolute quiet to sleep, this won't be ideal for you.
All in all, we'd stay there again. We figured that we don't spend a huge amount of time in hotel rooms when we're travelling, and the price and location could not be beat. The noise wasn't too bothersome to us (we live on a quiet suburban street, so aren't used to much noise, but this wasn't too bad for us). However, if you are picky, and if you're a traveler who likes to be catered to, and expects high levels of service and creature comforts, please avoid disappointment and then bad-mouthing about your experience at Quinto Sol. This is a good basic hotel in a wonderful town, and it clearly isn't set up to cater to the whims of people looking for a resort type of experience.

You get exactly what you pay for

Big rooms, good location, smell of sewage emanating from toilet. What more can you ask for? I actually liked the place because the tree growing up through the atrium was cool, the staff was always nice but didn't bother me, and it had A/C. But I can see how some of the more finicky folks would complain about the toilet smell, the Best Western style of the rooms, and the construction noise in the morning.
When I say, "you get exactly what you pay for," I mean it's worth the $40/night I paid when splitting the cost with two other buddies. If I was alone or picking up the tab for me and a babe, I might go for the next step up.
Nice, clean hotel with a good location.

Is the Quinto Sol a resort, no. Is it a simple clean place to spend a few days in PDC yes. What do you want for $100 a night high season? We called during Easter Break on Monday for a mini-suite for Wednesday and it was no problem. All the employees were extremely helpful with the booking and on arrival. They took our bags to the room and refused a tip. We had a very early flight on Sunday morning and the cab arrangements they made were flawless (we were 5 minutes early and he'd been waiting 10).The room itself was clean and functional although the kitchen was sparsely outfitted with kitchenware. Breakfast is included at the restaurant on the main floor and was good but unremarkable. A very large hot tub is on the 2nd floor and offers a great view of 5th Avenue, nice to relax in while enjoying an afternoon cocktail. The hotel is located at an ideal location right on 5th Avenue actually towards the north end of the pedestrian wakway. It's a short 10 minute walk to Mamitas Beach Club. Another short 10 minute walk to the grocery store. It also seems a little quieter than some of the other hotels that are in the heart of 5th Ave because it is near the end.
Would we stay at the Quinto Sol again? Sure, without any doubts although there are a number of other private hotels in Playa del Carmen that we would also like to try!

We stayed at Hotel Quinto Sol for five days in late February 2007. We arrived at 9am and the staff held our luggage for us before check in at 3pm. The staff was very nice and helpful. They called a cab for us and told us how to get to Tulum by city bus called ADO, which is an excellent way to travel to the ruins. The hotel is located on a very quiet section of La Quinta Avenida, but nearby construction made it difficult to sleep in past 8am. However, why would you want to sleep in late when you are in Mexico? I am sure they are done with the construction by now.
There are only two complaints I can think of, but they wouldn't stop me from staying at this hotel again. The first is the shower temperature bordered on luke warm and the second is the bed was hard, which is very common for Mexican hotels. I have stayed at many hotels throughout Mexico and all the beds have the same stiffness.
Staying at a budget hotel like this one allowed us to visit many restaurants on La Quinta and try a variety of cuisine. I loved this hotel and I definitely would stay here again.
