Good stay for the price!
Great deal for students or people who don't have a lot of money to spend on the hotel. Our room was clean (and with refrigerator) and the staff was friendly. The location (Little Italy quarter) was very good for a lot of attractions (Gaslamp and Little Italy quarters, Seaport Village, ocean) and with easy access in public transport for the Zoo, Balboa Park and museums, La Jolla quarter, Coronado Island, etc.
The only bothering thing reported in many reviews was the sound of the train passing near the hotel in evening, but it wasn't that bad because it did not bother us while sleeping.

On 10/22/07 we reserved a room via hotel.com at the Marina Inn, Pacific Hwy, San Diego, CA. when we were evacuated during the San Diego fires. That motel has the same owner, Vicky Patel, who owns the Vagabond Inn at Hotel Circle S, Mission Valley, San Diego, CA. This complaint involves both motels (See Vagabond Inn Mission Valley San Diego listing).
On 10/22/07 Ms. Patel charged $159 a night for the Marina Inn even though the rack rate was $94.95 for these dates for a king bed and the internet rate, $64.95. The Motel is within 50 feet of a railroad crossing on a hilly main intersection within the flight path of the airport. Horns, train whistles, engines reving up the hill and airplanes landing weren't even the worst of it. The toilet was stopped up with feces. Maintenance came three times to no avail. The lights did not work. We moved to another room and unpacked but found water damage under a major part of the carpet. Vicky Patel told us that she would let us move to the Vagabond Inn, Mission Valley for the same price. Upon entering we were told the rack rate was $129 a night & with an AAA discount it would be $99. The internet displayed the AAA rate as $80.10. But Ms. Patel insisted that for us it would be $159 a night. I informed her that gouging is illegal (penal code 396(d)) & that I am an AAA member. She agreed to $99. We checked out of the Vagabond Inn on 10/25 @ 10 am. The Motel refused to give us a bill saying it can only be gotten from the Marina Inn. We went back to the Marina Inn. They also refused to give us bill. Hotel.com said they cannot help. AAA can't help since it was booked @ hotel.com. We stayed one night at the Marina Inn and 2 nights at the Vagabond Inn yet according to my credit card company we were overcharged and pre-charged $725. We are contesting. Stay away from anything that is owned by Vicky Patel. The BBB shows a poor record for both places.

Coming to San Diego for the first time, our stay at the Marina Inn was as pleasurable as the first night at the Holiday Inn Express, but only less expensive and a better view. If you are like me I enjoy the simple things in life, and the Marina Inn was very simple and cozy. The best part was the cool ocean breeze that came in the windows early in the morning, and the very accomodating staff. Monish is the Assistant Manger and was extremely welcoming and helpful. I highly recommend this hotel for any first time out of town visiters looking to save money on hotels and spend it elsewhere....you'll defintely get more that what you pay for!!

Needing a place to stay the night before our 10 day cruise, at first I thought my wife made a mistake booking us in this hotel...as we approached, I saw it is located on a busy corner, two blocks from the freeway, one block from the train tracks, across the street from a gas station...., in other words, lots of noise....
But when we checked in, the staff was very helpful, placed us in the quietest room, which provided us with basic accomodations, which were fine, and we could walk three blocks to the cruise terminal to catch our ship. Best of all, they gave us a room rate that included parking for the 10 days we would be cruising. When we checked other hotels and the cost of public parking for the 10 day cruise, we figured we saved about $75. It was worth it.
