Stayed here one night when in town for school. I was staying with two others, who got there before me and did not want to not check in because they didn't have a reservation elsewhere and they didn't want to loose me. The lobby looked like something out of the 1960s. The elevator ride was ricketty and noisy. The corridor leading to the room was dark and musty, with closed off "conference rooms" lending an eerie air. Then, I had to go outside to get to my room, passing a partially empty but uncovered pool.
The room itself was clean for the most part, but very shabby. The bathroom, like the lobby, looked like a '60s throwback. The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable, and I just didn't want to think about the bedding.
For the money, I could have stayed up the road at the Comfort Inn, and got breakfast with it. This was rediculous.

Ok, so this place isn't the Sheration or Hilton, but what do you really expect from a motel/motor inn type chain.
We stayed here for 1 night during August 2004, purely cos we got stuck in Richmond after our transportation to Savannah was cancelled due to Hurrican Charley.
We found the staff polite and extremely helpful (arranged an alternative taxi for us, after the one we have booked thenight before failed to arrive - handy since we had to get to the bus station quick!).
From the outside, the motel and outside of the rooms look like they haven't seen a coat of paint in 20 years, but the interior of the room was clean and tidy and quite spacious.
There is a pretty good little pub/restaurant "Extra Billys" next to the hotel which put on a good dinner.
I was not comfortable staying at the Inns of VA

So, I found out about the Inns of VA through hotels. It looked pretty decent and affordable online so I made a reservation. When I arrived it looked pretty dated but clean in the lobby area. I went to my room, which I was not told on hotels was only accessible from the outside. As I walked to the room I noticed that the outside area was not well lit and the pool was not drained or covered. I felt very uncomfortable during my walk to the room, but when I went inside things only got worse. The room was relatively clean but very musty smelling. Some of the lights didn’t work and the bathroom had a lot of chipped painted tiling on the floor and something brown on the tile. The room was very dated looking and the paint job was terrible. I left after about 10 minutes of inspection because I did not feel safe staying there alone. The front desk was very helpful, accommodating, and friendly. After showing me another room (which was not much better) they canceled my reservation enabling me to find another hotel.

This hotel was aweful, dirty and the people were rude. They tried to nickel and dime us for things that we did not even do (long distance phone call?) Also, they were running a special for $49 dollars a night and we had our reservation for $69 and they wouldn't give us the special rate.
