We just spend a long weekend (from Friday to Monday) at Hotel Skjaldebreid. Overall the hotel was better than average: the service was very friendly, the room was in very good condition, the scandinavian breakfast was ok and the location was excellent at the main shopping street Laugavegur.
Rating is still average because of the location, here's the exaplanation: the street is probaply "the" main street for Reykjavik's youth for cruising with their cars and moving between bars at nights. Since the noise insulation is not adequate in the room, we were using ear plugs in order to sleep during the nights.
We would not go back to the same hotel because of the noise during evenings and nights. Since this is the only negative thing about the whole hotel, maybe I could recommend this hotel to persons who party a lot and/or are "heavy" sleepers.

We stayed here for a long weekend and this is not the hotel to stay in if you are expecting to get some sleep. The hotel has a nightclub next door which plays music until 4am. The music was so loud in our room we could hear every word to every song being played. We eventually changed rooms at 3am and the second room was quieter. The hotel is clean but basic. We would not recommend this hotel.

Hmmm hard to know where to start. The hotel is abit shabby and the rooms are small if you dont get a corner one, but I think the real problems come with the positioning. DONT STAY HERE IF YOURE A LIGHT SLEEPER, you will not sleep a wink over 48 hours of a weekend.
Look out for the static too, got an electric shock everytime I walked from the carpets to the lift.
Nice polish staff though and a huge breakfast spread.

We booked this hotel with last minute.com for a long weekend away. The hotel was right central for everything and whilst not large in appearance it was clean and excellent for what we wanted. Staff were lovely and helpful as was everyone in iceland. Buffett breakfast was good and complimentary coffee for guests available all day in breakfast conservatory. 5 minutes walk from all bstro's bars and nightclubs. a bit noisy on saturday night but what a great area for nightlife !!! would recomend this hotel to anyone looking for a good quality mid priced place to stay. Iceland very expensive and if you want prices like teneriffe then go there not iceland. Everything we idd accepting in advance that it was all a bit on the expensive side was superb. you cannot fail to find something to do and the snow was crisp and white !!!!

We booked this hotel with airmiles for a long weekend. After we booked we read the reviews on here and checked in a little apprehensively - worried we were going to find a small, shabby, noisy hovel. However, the hotel was spotlessly clean and not at all shabby. Whilst neither the hotel nor the rooms are large - this is Reykjavik and they don't do large! The hotel was very central for everything and the staff were incredibly helpful, the breakfast was good and the complimentary coffee/tea/hot chocolate throughout the day was very welcome after a few cold excursions.
The hotel is a bit noisy at the weekend, but then you do have a great bar next door and you are in the centre of a city renowned for it's nightlife so what do you expect?! If you are a a light sleeper then either take some earplugs or don't stay on the main street - alternatively go out, enjoy the nightlife and contribute to the noise!
I would recomend this hotel to anyone looking for a good quality mid priced place to stay. Iceland is very expensive and you get what you pay for - if you want luxury and space you're going to have to pay for it.
