The hotel is conveniently located nearby the train station (10 mn by walk), and close to restaurants and bars. Except that, I don't see much advantages to this hotel. There is no air conditioning and it get really hot in the rooms even though the temperatures outside were not so high. If you open the window to get some fresh air, then the problem is the noise (plenty of bars outside, animated area until late night..). Hard to get some smile from the desktop. They charge you 30 CHF for a 2 hours internet connection ! The breakfast is very limited. Rooms are very spartan and not that cheap.

Hotel is located centrally for Zurich, a few minutes from the main train station. It is, however, located in one of the more "interesting areas" of Zurich. The road running parallel is home to many bars, "dancing clubs" and kebab shops and it can be noisy at night.
I've stayed here twice, and the more recent one was during Euro 2008 football so it was obviously a lot nosier - but this is not the hotel's fault :)
The hotel is clean and nicely priced. The room was clean but a little on the small side. I found the walls to be quite thin and I could hear noise from rooms next to me and above me - but this can be said of most hotels in Zurich.
I had breakfast one day - which was ok and plentiful.
I'd stay here again because its cheap and well located but it's a 3 star hotel for a reason. Don't expect luxury. (Or a smile).

I had a one night lay-over in Zurich so I wanted to get a place in town without spending much money. The best thing that I can say is that the hotel is close to the train station, about a 10 minute walk.
There are, however, problems that one should be aware of. The rooms are small and very, very spartan. While the general location is not bad, it is in an area where a block or two away is a street that is a hang-out for students and young adults that not only congest the area but their partying can be heard into the wee hours. Additionally, while I never felt threatened, the hotel has a fair number of adult lounges in the area. I do not recommend the hotel for a family with young children.
There are also problems that I foresee but did not personally experience. There is no air-conditioning. It did not present a problem for me because the weather was still cool enough that it was not necessary. However, during the summer, if you need to open the window and your room faces the back of the hotel, the noise from the street may be extremely annoying. Another thing is that the very next building to the hotel is presently undergoing extensive renovation. I am not talking about minor repairs. In the street in the front of that building is a very large construction crane taking up a large portion of the street. I was at the hotel on a Sunday so I did not hear or observe the construction. As a result, I cannot tell you whether the work is a major inconvenience or how long the work will continue, however, I thought you should be aware and judge accordingly.
While the hotel is not terrible and might present an affordable accommodation for some, I would not return.

I've spent 3 nights here. It's very conveniently located for the main attractions of the city - and the nightlife & shopping in this part of Zurich is very "colourful" - but not rough.
The staff at this hotel were uniformly indifferent to their customers - quite an achievement in a country that has always surprised me with its easy attentiveness, but we were "processed" efficiently. The included breakfast was adequate, but nothing more. The rooms are spartanly furnished, noisy laminate floors, no rugs, . Doors that need to be slammed when exiting the rooms which doesn't make for a
restful sleep.
However, the place is spotlessly clean. The heating is controllable, the shower is good, the mattresses comfortable.
I'd stay again - but not as my prefered choice.

In ten trips scattered over eight years, I have stayed in a wide range of Zurich hotels -- the beautifully sited and furnished Sorrel Hotel (1) on a hilltop by the zoo, the old atmospheric Hotel Florof (2) , the stylishly modern boutique Hotel du Theatre (1), the generic Marriott (1), the Best Western Hotel Zürcherhof (1), Hotel du Theatre (2), and the Hotel Basilea (2). And I have seen several friend's rooms at the Hotel Scheuble. Each of these hotels has some advantages. The Hotel Basilea provides reasonable quality and a good location at a decent price. Better quality than the Zurcheroff or Scheuble, more convenient location than the Sorell, better price than Sorell, Marriot, Theatre, Florof.
Location: In an older section of Zurich, near the central railway station and major transfer points for trams, near dining and shopping, adjacent to the University of Zurich and the ETH. It is also next to several convivial bars, and street noise at night as the bars let out can be a problem.
Hint: If you pack light, take the train from the airport to the central railway station, then walk a few blocks. No need to pay for a cab or an airport bus.
Hint: Ask for a room at the rear of the hotel to reduce street noise, or ask for a room at the front of the hotel to take in the street scene.
Room: My single was furnished with stylish functional modern desk, comfortable bed with comforter, chair and LCD TV. I found the bed comfortable. Size was adequate. Bathroom with basics -- shower, but no bath. The room was very very clean. Larger and cleaner than the singles in a neighboring nominal three star that my friends used.
Hint: Take your own soap -- the tiny bar of poor quality soap was not enough. Take your own washcloth -- like most European hotels, the Basilea is towels only.
Breakfast: Standard cold buffet with good breads, assorted jams and other toppings, sliced ham, cheese, canned fruit, yogurt, cereal, boiled eggs, and (of course) muesli.
Hint: Eat breakfast on the early side -- the hotel ran short of several items a full hour before closing on two of the four mornings in my most recent visit.
Services: Internet wifi was priced very high. Front desk offered some basic services with reasonable efficiency. Refreshment is limited to a vending machine in the lobby, but the area is full of bars and restaurants.
Hint: If you are on a budget, try two tricks. First, buy beer and late night snacks at the COOP near the train station instead of using the vending machine or hitting the bars. And take a bag with you to avoid the 30 franc fee for a bag. Second, look for an erratic but free wifi signal in the lobby and to avoid using the high priced in house wifi service.
Have stayed here before, will stay here again.....
