Unfortunately, we only had the chance to stay for one night.
Really is a great find, and we will plan to use the Hatton on our next trip through Melbourne, later this year..
Staff were helpful from the moment we arrived till the time we left.
The room / bathroom was spotless, with all amenities any traveller would want.(before anyone says it, I know there is always someone who wants more!).
In addition to the front patio, there is also the roof area available for guests to use.
The public areas have interesting Asian artefacts.
There did not appear to be a lift, so anyone with movement difficulties may want to check this point with the Hatton Hotel before making a booking.

One of these nice spots which you would like to find more often in big cities. Cosy and relaxed. Rooms spottless and practical. Nice breakfast place. Possiblity for your morning coffee on the terrace in the sun. Internet available for guests. Good location close to the Botanic gardens. No one will regret to stay here...!

We stayed here for several nights in January 2008 and greatly enjoyed the place.
This is not the hotel to go to if you are looking for around the clock room service or all mod cons. If you are an independent traveller and want something that is not staid and corporate, then this could be for you. It's more like a B&B or an inn than a hotel, really. The building has a faded grandeur and the whole operation isn't really hotel-like, but most guests seem to enjoy it. The location is great, steps away from the Botanical Gardens, and a pleasant walk through them into the central business district. If you feel lazy, the tram to the city stops outside the front door. In the other direction there's plenty of good shopping. It's a very charming part of the town.
The rooms are very nice, and have an individual flair. Ours could have been slightly cleaner, but it was very pleasant and spacious. They have good touches, like l'Occitane products in the bathroom and high quality tea and coffee in the minibar/kitchenette of each room. The breakfast in the front room, which doubles as the check-in, is excellent. Delicious muesli, breads, and fresh fruits are on offer and the staff make good coffees. The decor is minimal and comfortable. The front room (with the outside terrace) doubles as a bar for the hotel guests in the early evening, and seemed a pleasant place to relax with a glass of wine.
The staff aren't available around the clock, but were all very helpful and sweet with any queries we had.
In short, it's a comfortable and attractive place, and you feel like you're in the real Melbourne. We enjoyed it very much.

Recently returned from a trip to Oz having stayed in The Hatton whilst in Melbourne.
Great hotel all-round really. The staff were friendly & helpful. The rooms were large with good facilities. Decor is simple & stylish with more character than those dull hotel chains. The breakfast room was fab, with a good selection of cereals, pastries & fresh fruit. Free internet access was also really helpful in planning the rest of our trip.
Make sure you check out the roof-top terrace for views & peaceful sun-bathing!

A curate's egg

"a curate's egg" as they say...good in parts.
The Hatton is not a boutique hotel. OK, so let's get that straight. It is a gorgeous property in the best part of Melbourne with a lovely homey feel and ambience. BUT, boutique it is not. If you think of the Ypma 'Hip' Hotel series...the Hatton would not make it in any edition. BUDGET 'HIP' maybe, but that depends on your foreign currency and exchange rate to the Aussie dollar.
The Hatton is charming; and the service is limited. There is no 'front desk' per se...it is the bar/breakfast area for the hotel which closes at 11pm at night and when the person 'on duty' is away the door is locked. There is wireless internet; and a table with magazines but no area to just lounge.
The rooms are varied...nice wooden floors (if you stay below one be prepared for the noise effect); they have fireplaces (that don't work) and sash windows that rattle when the wind is full force. The bathrooms are very clean and simple (with L'Occitane amenities and fluffy white towels). The two rooms I stayed in were similar but slightly spartan and had an air of a 'converted' old apartment about them. The kitchen-ettes are 'motel' like and not geared up for anything more than tea/coffee and toast/cereal. Which, brings me to the breakfast. Great coffee, cereal and toast. But that is it. There is no hot food or snack option to speak of, and it is more like a wine bar at night.
All in all, a great little place with 'euro-charm' in South Yarra...if you want a B&B like feel for a weekend escape, or are staying in town on business and DON'T want a face-less 'corporate' experience - then consider the Hatton. I will return, but if you need service or amenities...stay at The Westin. If you want 'boutique'...stat at the the Prince of Wales in St. Kilda.
