This is my second Austrian review this year where I can't tell if it's "worth the money" since I got a free one night stay, courtesy of Austrian Airlines, after being bumped off a flight to Eastern Europe due to overbooking (the return overnight stay at Fischamend was part of the plan).
It's been an accidental stay, with quite some time spent waiting for the luggage to (maybe) reach my room, so my perspective is a bit different. Yes, there are many shops nearby (including a very good Billa supermarket) but money doesn't goo far in Vienna on Sundays (except restaurants, I've only seen a newspapers stand open in the train station).
The hotel is fully integrated in the streetscape (one might even miss it when walking by), with a small interior garden. The check-in was fast (mostly due to few people coming at that time; when more people were in the lobby many pretended they hadn't noticed there already was a waiting line). When going up you need to enter your room keycard in the elevator, otherwise you get to the floors where the elevator is called. The (single) room is rather small but OK - the bed is a bit small for larger adults. There is air conditioning - a good bonus.
The restaurant is higher end and excellent. The bar is very good too - sometimes too much tobacco smoke inside (at least for someone coming from North America).
The hotel also hosts various shows and cultural events - the catch is that you must know German for this. All the staff I've been in contact with were reasonably (to very) fluent in English
You can get easily to the historic centre via public transit or just walking (30 to 45 minutes, depending on your target and path). I've seen very few taxis down the street, and I recall just one waiting for customers - you may call for one (probably German is a big help here too). The Westbahnhof train station is pretty close, you can see it on the window if facing the main street.
I can't tell if the evening/night make a difference in the type of people you see down the street around the hotel, I guess it's the same as in any large city in downtown (not the American downtown abandoned over night); I wouldn't worry about this (you still have to watch yourself wherever you are, at home or abroad).
The only reason I don't give 5 stars is that I've spent only one night (free of charge) and I didn't even think about the spa, room service, shows etc. I would definitely recommend it for a trip to Vienna.

My wife and I stayed at the Wimberger October 4-7, 2007, and we thoroughly enjoyed the hotel. It is most convenient to the West Bahnhof, about a 5 minute walk. The hotel staff spoke excellent English, and the made every attempt to accommodate all of our wishes and needs, including booking a city tour and checking out the night before our early morning departure the next day. The hotel has a quaint lounge/bar and a nice restaurant. Each is reasonably priced for hotels.
The main issues that some might find difficult to deal with is that the hotel is located some distance from Vienna's #1 district/area, which includes most of the tourist attractions, such as the opera house. However, the city has an excellent public transport system that includes the U-trains (mostly subways), busses, and trams/trolleys. 24 hour or 3 day passes covering all of the public transport are readily available and inexpensive, so the hotel's location some distance from the city center is not a huge problem.
Our hotel room was very large, equipped with a mini bar and snacks. The hotel also offers free internet access; at the time, there were three computers available.
If we return to Vienna, we will most definitely consider staying at the hotel again.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at the Arcotel Wimberger in Vienna in August 2007 and were extremely satisfied. It is a 4star+ hotel and we were very impressed from the moment we walked into the lobby. Staff were very friendly and helpful, excellent security system, and very clean and quiet hotel. Our room was superb -- it was clean, extremely comfortable beds and pillows, and had all amenities including air conditioning in the room and hair dryer in the bathroom. The buffet breakfast was excellent with a wide selection and delicious food. If there is any downside to the hotel, it would be that it is not in the best location, however, it's not too bad. It is just a few minutes walk to the Westbahnhof (train station) which was very convenient for us and also to the major shopping street Mariahilferstrasse. All in all, we would stay at this hotel on our next trip to Vienna and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Vienna that want an almost 5 star hotel for a very reasonable price.
