We enjoyed this rustic hotel

We spent one night at the Volcano House in a Crater View room. We had a view of Halemaumau Crater and it was a unique experience. Prior reviews had me worried about what to expect, but we realized that we would not be getting a 5-star hotel. What you are paying for is the close proximity to the crater. Staff was very friendly. We were assigned a 1st floor room upon check-in but asked for a 2nd floor room when we realized that park visitors were standing right outside the 1st floor window. We were very pleased when we moved to the 2nd floor. We had breakfast at the hotel and the buffet was OK. However, we took a short drive to Volcano Village for dinner at Thai Thai Restaurant which was great. I highly recommend this restaurant.
There is no TV in the rooms at Volcano House. We spent time in the lobby relaxing with a cup of coffee and talking about our day's adventure in the crater. The clerk at check-in said hotel guests often get upset and leave once they are told there is no TV.
All in all it was a positive memorable experience for our family which includes two young children.
Way Overpriced

Glad we visited the Park, but wouldn't stay here for any reason. We had a tiny twin room in the Ohia building for $130 plus tax. I know the buildings are old, but the upkeep was dismal. There was a miniscule (and noisy) heater perched up on the wall, the shutters looked like they had been painted dozens of times, and the stairs going down to our room were quite narrow...hence the many scrape and scuff marks from luggage. We requested NOT to have a downstairs room, and only saw one other couple in the entire building. Obviously our request was ignored.
The staff was okay, but seemed more interested in talking to each other.

We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and decided to do something special by checking out a volcano because we had never seen one.
Even after reading the reviews (which were mostly negative) we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Well, let me tell you........
The whole experience was worse then the negative reviews. Everything would have been tolerable, except for the horrible accommodations.
Our room consisted of a bed with a stained-30-year-old-mattress and one tiny light and a heater hanging from the top of the door frame. The closet smelled like someone had been using it as a toilet. The shower had mold growing half way up the walls. The toilet only flushed if you stood and held down the handle.
The air quality, during our stay, was classified as extremely poor - bordering on dangerous sulfer levels. When we arrived, the 2 rotting wooden windows were wide open to draw some of the pee-smell out of the room. In turn, the room was filled with volcano smoke. That was what we had to sleep in..... not to mention the 10 year old stained pillows that accompanied the squeaking mattress.
Oh ya, don't forget - there is no TV in the room. If you want some entertainment before bedtime, make sure you bring a book.
The price for this dump was painful. Most 5-star high-end hotels don't charge that much for high quality accommodations and amenities.

This hotel is right on the property of the National Park. We booked a deluxe room overlooking the volcano. We couldn't see the volcano because of the trees. What a view. When we got to the room you could tell it hadn't been used for a while. There was a musty, closed room smell. The room was way overpriced, $250 per night, including taxes. The staff were rude.
If you do stay here, do not eat in the restaurant. It is horrible. This hotel is one that should be torn down, all the staff fired and started over.
