My boyfriend and I went to Playa del Carmen in late May for a much-needed vacation. We learned about Posada Mariposa through our travel agent and thought it sounded great (i.e. 1 block from the beach, literally steps away from La Quinta Avenida, etc.) so we booked it. I've never been greeted with such warmth at check-in. The concierge, whose name I didn't catch, showed us to our room and basically treated us as family, which, believe me, is beyond awesome after a long day of traveling. There was a safe which was big enough to put all our valuables in, and we never had any problems with stealing, dishonesty, etc., that I've heard tell of from other tourists. I guess it was sort of weird not being able to flush toilet paper down the toilets, but you get used to it after a day, and besides, that's the way it is in any non-resort place, or so I hear. My boyfriend thought the beds were a little hard, I agree but they didn't stop me from getting sleep--he also thought the noise from the remodeling was too loud--I'm from Manhattan so I wasn't aware of any noise and I slept through it. There's a security guard on at night so I felt completely safe at night--the entire area is pretty safe too. Mariposa is situated far enough from the loud nightlife, but close enough to get there in 5 minutes or so. Beware: they will charge you for damage--we accidentally had some sunblock spillage on of the sheets, and they charged us $25--this didn't bother me much though, because they sent it to the cleaners and it didn't come out, and they also told us a few days in advance of checkout that we might get charged for it, so it wasn't like "Oh hey, you're getting charged for this" kind of thing at checkout 5 minutes before you leave for the airport. They also make you put down a deposit at check-in so it's not out of the blue. The rooms are charming--old style Mexico, unlike your typical cookie-cutter resort. There is a working air-conditioner--a god-save on those days, they'll hold your room key at the front desk if you want to keep it safe while you're at the beach, they have a discount on beach lounge chairs, they called us a cab the day we were in a hurry to get out of the airport, they help with your baggage, bottom line: we'll be returning for sure.

My family and I we booked the hotel through expedia.com, decided a few days before that my little sister is going to come too, we called expedia and they called the hotel, everything was fine we just had to pay an extra charge of 10 dollars per night. The hotels suites are too small for 4 people so we stayed at the around the corner at the condohotel el patio.
We liked the location a lot, it was on the 5th AVE and also close to the beach. With a little ticket from the Front Desk we were able to get everything half price at the beach club which has a partnership with the hotel.
The service was really nice and I never experienced such helpful people on the frontdesk. Employees on the frontdesk were speaking english 24 hours. We never had trouble because of the language.
Sometimes the AC gave us a little hard time but it didnt bither us that much. The water pressure could have been better but we were able to shower and there was also enough hot water for 4 people showering at least twice a day.
My dad left after 4 days and we booked for 5 days, after 4 days we went to the front desk and asked if we could stay 2 more days jsut 3 people and it wasn't a problem, we paid for the last days in cash all in advance.
At our last night of the trip we went to the front desk and asked if I could check out after my parents because we had different flights and it wasnt a problem, my mom also made sure if all bills are paid that there wont be surprises when I check out as the last person.
On the next morning my mom and sister left early in the morning to the airport and I went to eat breakfast and on a last little shopping trip. When I come back to the room to get my luggage I find a note on the table which said I would have to pay 101 USD for a missing difference because we changed the room, but it was billed from our credit card through expedia.com.
I didn't want to miss my bus to the airport so I just gave them my credit card and they charged me 101 dollars. If I would have had more time I would have argued but it just didn't work out. After I paid the "difference" they handed an envelope to me with 50 dollar for the safe key deposit. I didn't even know about that cause my dad didn't tell me about it.
The whole check-out was really strange...
When I got home i talked to my mom about it and she wanted a statement from the hotel about it, but suddenly nobody spoke english. We also contacted expedia.com if they might be able to help us but they were not able to contact them. Now we went through mastercard and they took the amount of after i wrote a statement.
We loved the stay there till the checkout, we would have came back but now it ruined our nice memories, because it was just not necessary.

We have been disappointed from the firt contact: they were doing restyling work., and the workers woke us up at 8 AM every morning (even on Saturday). It was like to live in an erecting yard: painting, smashing a hammer into a wall and other noises all day. Furthermore we discovered that we had to pay an extra of 12% if paying with credit card (it wasn't clearly written in the reservation). In the reservation there were 3 option for breakfast, and we discovered that the hotel doesn't have a restaurant and it's not possible to have breakfast there or everywhere else. The receptionists even after 5 days didn't know our faces: I suppose they could have given the room key at whomever...
The air conditioned didn't work properly: you could choose between sweat or freeze.. no half way!
The only thing that makes me write that it's not terrible is that the bed wasn't bad and the room was clean and tidy. Thanks to roomkeepers!
Before we left we ask for a reduction of the price, as a compensation for the unconfortable staying.. but all the receptionists are young boys and even asking the day before it wasn't possible to speek with the manager or someone else "in charge" of the place. With our great regret we knew that the owners are italians, as we are. We can firmly assure that this isn't the italian style!

I recently stayed at the Mariposa with my sweetheart for a duration of four nights and absolutely loved my stay. Like most of you, i checked out the reviews before hand but I was more than impressed when I actually got there.
My man Axel and the rest of the front desk crew couldn't possibly be any nicer or any more accomodating than they were. We arrived early, and although check in time is 2pm, Axel went out of his way to make sure we could get our room immediatley and that was greatly appreciated.
The hotel has such an awesome rustic, natural feel, that it truly is beautiful, small and quaint. The rooms were wicked too. Super clean, lots of hotwater, absolutely no bugs, and a fully functioning t.v. with lots of channels and a small fridge. The hotel made our stay that much more enjoyable and I will definitely been staying at the Mariposa on future visits and I will certainly be recommending it to anyone that is going to playa.
The location is so close to mamita's beach that you can feel it and at the risk of being redundent, the mariposa is awesome. Thanks Axel!!!
p.s. this is a 4:20 friendly hotel to those of you that know whaddup.....
