Can't fault the location.Just off the Vati ucta main street and a stroll from everything central, very handy at night as it so near to all the main eating and drinking places. Hotel is okay. Quite a "functional" welcome. Then a very eighties experience in terms of the decor of the rest of the hotel. Back across the corridor entrance and up a stairwell. Seating area at top of stairs had 2 dead roses in a plastic water bottle on a table with some hungarian magazines on it. Checked same table every day for 4 days and the dead roses remained - please put them out of their misery!! Did a guest leave them there - are the staff working to rule by not removing them?! Breakfast buffet was fine - mix of cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, boiled eggs, salads, stew, cooked eggs etc. But the staff were strange about replacing things that ran out. Salad bowls were empty and they just pushed them around and then ignored them. I drink coffee in the morning which was fine. My husband drinks english tea or earl gray - on the saturday morning they were out of both so he went without as when he asked they said they had no more. On Sunday both teas were available - are they getting Sunday delivery or just couldnt be bothered to replenish?? Also milk ran out with no replacements being brought out. The location is their seller here, it was really good but you'd really want to be an "in and out" traveller as far as actually staying in the hotel goes. Pretty basic with little attention to detail - our shower also leaked, as per previous review, as the doors didn't close properly. Also toiletries were not replace daily so ran out of shower gel - maybe a petty observation but I travelled with hand luggage only (to avoid bag check in charges) so had no liquid toiletries on me. The small bar of soap barely suffaced.

I would not recommend this hotel. It is in a beautiful art nouveau building from 1906, that has not been renovated since the Communist era. The rooms are marginal, with a lot of fake paneling, uncomfortable beds, and old bathrooms. The hallways are worse, crumbling stucco and tiles and not very clean. The location is good, next to the Elizabeth bridge and the Vaci Utica, but noisy. The restaurant , which is shown on the web site, has been renovated and is charming. That is where breakfast is served. The breakfast is generous. Rates run about 125 Euros and it is supposed to be 3 star, although I would say 1 or 2 stars.

We have just reurned from a 4 night stay at the Matyas City Hotel and must say we were pleasantly surprised. As previous reviewers have mentioned the hotel entrance and stairwell are in need of some attention, however this does not detract from the quality of service or quality of the rooms. After all we were not staying in the stairwell !!!
The rooms were of a good size and are good value for money, the breakfast was nothing special, but acceptable. The hotel was almost on the river next to the Elizabeth Bridge and we asked for a river view on arrival and this was not a problem, however be warned these rooms are noisier as they are right next the bridge, which has a constant flow of traffic.
We thought Budapest was lovely and four days just about right to see everyhting, we went to the Szechenyi Baths which are about a 45 minute walk and loved them. There are plenty of places to eat within walking distance and also went on evening river cruise, again which is only a 5 minute walk away. I would recommend Budapest and the Matyas City Hotel.

I did think the hotel would be better then i thought.. Check in was very good and polite but no help with bags at all... Check out was a service with a grunt.. The lady was was under pressure and did not cope well at all... The room had broken curtains which i asked to be fix which someone did try to fix them that day and ended up no better.. My room was street level almost which right outside on the front was the a coach stop... It was nosey with buses and guests banging the doors late into the night.. The room was clean and modern but once again dim lights in the room.. The bathroom was small and the shower did not work as it should... The mini bar was very expensive... The staff was all polite and helpful and the restaurant was good i thought... But it was a great loctation right in the middle of the main shopping area/street. Over all the the hotel is just ok for a 3 star... City well worth seeing thou!..
