Finding the Hotel was not that easy and took a while, even though we have been to amsterdam several times. The hotel foyer is a little dated, although the Staff are friendly and welcoming.
The rooms are heated by old cast iron style radiators which are not exactly adequate for the room size. Rooms are very basic and in all honesty cold. The toilet was pretty dirty: up to the standard of a public toilet. A few fittings were in disrepair. The TV was good and offered complimentery very adult television (If one is so inclined).
The location is very good and close to the train station on the northern edge of the red-light district, near numerous Chinese and asian restaurants.
We had an enjoyable stay despite the problems of the hotel but would only reccomend the hotel as a budget option for those who can do without creature comforts: such as heat and clean toilets. There was also a very entertaining volatile argument between a drunk English couple which lasted several hours one of the nights.

The hotel is on a v quiet side street, just outside the red light district so near to all the bars etc. Its only a few minutes from the main train station, and there are a few chinese buffet restaurants on the same street which are good value.
We booked a basement room, there are no windows but aircon, the room was fairly compact but very clean and tidy. Overall very impressed with the hotel, the staff were helpful etc, didnt sample the breakfast so cant comment on that.
We had friends who were staying in the red light district at the torezicht hotel, defo advise you not to stay there, the hotel is well seedy and the rooms are like hostel dorms and dirty too.

We booked our stay in the France Hotel as it appeared to offer everything that we needed for a short stay of 4 nights and within our budget. So we booked online before reading any reviews & had to give credit card details to secure the room as a deposit. It was shortly after this that we found this website, shock, horror, we were spending new year here & it appeared that we had booked into Fawlty Towers. We shopped around for another hotel & enquired about cancelling the room at the France Hotel. We were especially shocked at the customer added photos that are on here, so we printed up the hotels own room photos from the website & took them with us ready to show them (France Hotel) the standard of rooms that we had paid for & expected should there have been any problems.
We arrived at Amsterdams Central Station & after a short walk found the France Hotel. We went into reception & to be fair it is tired & could do with sprucing up, some decent chairs to relax in & a ban on smoking in this area, but when all said & done it is only a 3 star hotel which in our opinion is a fair rating. Checking in took rather a long time but the reception staff members were extremely thorough & helpful and this was to be the way for our entire stay when we had any questions or needed any information. So after checking in we made our way using the lift to our room, I opened the door expecting the worst but it was a very pleasant suprise the room was clean, fairly modern, a good size with plenty of storage space, nice ensuite & bearing in mind the 3 star rating we really couldn't of asked for any more.
Breakfast was next door in the Irish Bar which was sufficient with sliced meats, eggs, sausages, cheeses, brand name cereals, yoghurt , toast, fresh rolls, fresh fruit & a selection of fruit juices, teas & coffees.
To sum up our stay here, we did get what we had paid for, it was a 3 star hotel and that is what we got & was accurately described on the France Hotels website. The hotel was fine for our length of stay of 4 nights, its in a superb location on a quiet canal side in the heart of bustling central Amsterdam we would recommend it if you're travelling on a budget & we would stay here again.
** be aware of silly reports on here e.g such as statements of steep stairs leading to the reception and lift, these are 4 normal steps & scam central etc. I believe theres a lot of people who pay for 3 star & expect to get nothing less than 5 star for their money, this hotel certainly isn't the Movenpick but neither are you paying those prices**

I read bad reviews about the hotel after i had booked it so i was worried on arrival but the hotel turned out to be fine. It was situated in the centre so everything was within walking distance. The room was comfortable, clean and the staff were very helpful. The food in the pub nextdoor was nice. I stayed here with my boyfriend in December and in all it was a great trip. Everybody has different expectations but this hotel is perfect if your just looking for a basic place to stay in whilst your not out and about. So dont be put off by bad reviews, some people can just be fussy, it has everything you need for a good price.

I've stayed in the France several times over the last 7 years. It's not a very nice hotel but it's located in a great locatioin, just accross the street from Amsterdam Central Station. If you want a good location and not to expensive in central amsterdam it's ok, that is if you're not to picky. The rooms are small and not to clean. Service is basically poor. This hotel has been goin down ever since I came there first. The main reason I stay there is the price and the convienient location. Amsterdam hotels are expensive and most are not so nice in or around the centrum. Yeah! And one more thing: It's just few steps away from Europe's most popular window shopping area :)
