Fantastic hotel, i have styed in many 5 star resorts all over the world and the Tongsai rates highley. The feeling of outdoors and spce makes it a very special place.
The rooms are very spacious and airy, all have TV and Dvd to play music or you can take Dvds from the library. the concierge will also pick you up and drop you off at your room as often as you like as the hotel is on a hill, though you are able to freeley. All rooms have mosquito nets to protect you from the biten, which aids you with a fantastic sleep.
The beach is private and very peacfull, with no sellers annoying you, and no water sport are allowed you are given cold towels and mineral water throughout the day at no cost, which is a very pampering touch. Floyds bistro is on th beach and i think its wonderful to not have to worry about dressing for luch in such a relaxed setting.
The staff are exceptional and the surroundings beautiful, the overall privacy, peace and comfort makes the Tongsai a very very memorable experience and i am returing this new year to do it all again.

The reviews on Tongsai bay are quite accurate but I'd like to add a few more comments.
We stayed there for 6 nights recently and probably wouldn't go back. First of all, it isn't cheap. So you expect it to be very good. There were a lot of Brits there and young honeymoon couples. Too many Brits for my liking - especially the typical loud mouth Southern boys. I don't agree with the staff allowing football tops to be worn in Floyds Bistro nor do I think it's too much too ask to ask people to wear a T shirt or something whilst they're eating lunch. There was clearly a lot of good clientel at the resort - why is it always the English who have to behave like pigs.
The location is excellent, as are most of the rooms. The first room we had was poor and not as described - the final room we got was fantastic. Is this the usual trick of fobbing you off with the worst room first? Beware if you get bitten by mosquitoes - there is a lot of vegetation in the resort and I was bitten badly. The staff were very helpful though, especially a lady named Porn oddly enough.
The New Years eve dinner in the Thai Restaurant area was very expensive and a waste of money if not for the fact that half of the money was going to the Tsunami appeal - at least that made it worthwhile. We should have known not to go as buffets are typically not our cup of tea. We ate very little as we've had food poisoning in the past from such dinners. A bad example in this case was the open display of cheeses opposite the barbacue area - they were sweating badly and early on in the evening. We left early.
Before the dinner was a gathering for free cocktails in the lobby area. What was really surprising was the use of cheap alcohol for some of the drinks - i.e. Richmond Gin. Now I'd expect to see that in kiddy bars for happy hour stuff - not in a top resort. That was cheap and nasty as we're the 'presents' from the star tree. Badly done and a poor reflection on what should be a first class resort all round. The management should know better.
Overall the food (apart from the buffet) was excellent. Breakfast is nothing special, especially if you've been to other resorts in Asia - and it wasn't included in the high room rate - another sneaky and unnecessary money making exercise.
Facilities overall are very good and if this is your cup of tea then you may love it. But we think it could be so much better and overall you can do more with your money.

Tongsai Bay is the most beautiful and relaxing holiday resort we have ever spent time at. The hotel cottages are clean and spacious and the staff cannot do enough for you. The bath on the balcony overlooking the sea is out of this world.
It was quite honestly the best holiday we have ever had

This admittedly was the most I've ever paid for a hotel room - and this wasn't even for business - so I was praying that I wasn't blowing my dosh. I wasn't disappointed. It certainly is not for everyone, but if your aim was like mine to just get away from people and relax - then this is the place. It's about a 10min cab ride (THB 200 = GBP 3 or USD 5) from the main shopping areas with some good restaurants (dinner including alcohol will be less than USD 10 per head) - although I do recommend the inhouse excellent Thai restaurant where the food is excellent but the cost about 3 times what you'd pay in town. The villas are generally separate buildings, with the most spacious verandahs overlooking the private beach, bay and the freshwater pool. The verandah's have 4 poster bed with mosquito net, full standup bar, dining table, deck chairs, washing basin, bath / shower and still lots of room. The room inside (air conditioned perfectly) comes with 2 large queen beds, living room with DVD player, large changing room etc. The view and tranquility is to die for, and the freshwater pool is not for kids - it is very, very quiet, and the pool appears to drop away into the ocean. The beach restaurant is excellent, and theres a coffee / internet cafe etc. Most visitors appeared to be either honeymooners, couples in their 40's & 50's, and several gay couples (25 - 40yo). Children are welcome I presume, but there weren't that many there, and it added to the peace. All in all, despite the cost, I will definitely be a repeat visitor to this resort. Well recommended.
