I had to be in Madison for a convention so I stayed at the Best Western Inn on the Park hotel. The hotel was about 3 blocks from the convention center so it was a nice and easy walk. Check in was fast and friendly. The room was ok, it was a little older but it was VERY clean. The bathroom had great water pressure and the linens were nice. The lounge was a great place to have a few drinks and unwind. There are a few places that will deliver to your room late at night, their info is in the hotel directory. I left my room key in my room and when I went to the front desk to get a new one they asked for my id, I did not have it, it was still up in my room. The front desk agent walked with me up to my room so that I could show her my id. This made my stay very comfortable knowing that the hotel takes security serious. This was my first trip to Madison and I will come back and stay at the Best Western Inn on the Park again.

My daughter had a violin workshop that took place at at the Inn recently. We originally weren't going to spend the night, but decided to see if there was availability last minute. We ended up paying rack rate.
We arrived early in the morning, and stored our things. We were pleased with the service that got us a roomb y 10:00 am. This was very important as it gave us a place for the infant to nap.
Our room was very large, and had one king bed. The bathroom was quite small with a little mildew here and there. We also noticed peeling wallpaper in our room. In general, throughout most of the hotel, this same sense of needing to update was clear. There were little things like none of the vending machines by the pool had a dollar bill slot, nor was there a change machine, so we had to go to the front desk for change.
We did notice that there were renovations occuring on two floors though, so that may be in the future. Our room did have a refrigerator, and that was nice. Generally all our service experiences with the front desk were positive, with friendly and prompt greetings.
In other areas of the hotel (like the restaurant) service was not as good. Though the restaurant is a separate entity, it really did dampen the spirit of our stay.
It was great to be at the workshop, and the close proximity to the Capitol was great, but there are other hotels as close that are similarly priced, but a little less dated.

I work quite a bit in Madison and this is usually my first choice. Not because it is the greatest hotel, or value (work pays), or anything else. I stay because of location. I work downtown and it is so easy to come in, let the valet park the vehicle and be done with it until it is time to leave. I can walk to the office, food, entertainment etc. until my stay is over.
It seems like the rooms overlooking the capitol have been updated while the other wing are the older smaller rooms, which are dated and not that great. But sometimes i get lucky and get a nice suite overlooking the square (and the coolest thunderstorm i ever saw once).

OK, but...

OK, this hotel is convenient to downtown, but after that it suffers from age, thin walls, old beds and staff who kept up loud room- to-room chatter while cleaning the rooms. A family wedding drew us to this hotel -- can't imagine what would get me back. Not a dive, but not worth the $s.
SOOO convenient

There are very few hotels within walking distance of all the fun and exciting things to do in downtown Madison. This hotel was so very convenient and within walking distance to all of the State Street restaurants, stores and Comedy Club. It was right on the Capitol Square which made it doubly convenient for dropping off purchases from the fantastic Farmer's Market on Sat. a.m. and eight or more easy blocks to the campus for music on the lake on weedkends! We valet parked our car and did not drive it again until we left, so we had no problems with parking. As with other reviews, the steel doors are not insulated to the rooms and you can hear the goings on in the hallway and people slamming their doors, the pillows aren't the greatest and the air conditioning does blow across the bed at night, but you can turn it off and the carpet is a little buckled and needs replacing. But, truly, it was worth the reasonable price considering the convenience. The bathroom was updated and very nice and the staff, including room attendants, were very nice. The room was clean. Having a restaurant for breakfast ordering in the building was a plus, since not too many offerings for breakfast on State Street. I would definitely book this hotel again for a fun stay at a reasonabale price.
