We stayed in the Onyx for a few days in July 2008. We had stayed in a few different hotels during our visit to Boston and this was the best.
The rooms were clean and extremely modern, and while our double/double room was not huge we managed with two adults and two teens.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and were usually about during the wine and cheese hour (a lovely touch) to give tips on restaurants or attractions in and around the city.
The location is only a very short walk from Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, the Aquarium and wharf, etc.
The only negative comment we had was that a fee was necessary here to use the computer with internet access, while at most of the other hotels we visited, this was a complimentary service.

Stayed at the Onyx for the 4th of July weekend. Chose the hotel based on price and pet friendly policy. Hotel looked great in pics on website... looks just as good, if not better in person. The decor was very nice.. modern look, but nothing crazy.... nice combination of colors and materials. The staff was VERY friendly and helpful. The room was not huge, but served its purpose. We had a king sized bed, very nice bathroom, desk, tv, iron, floor to ceiling windows, free wifi... couldn't ask for more. The bed was SUPER comfy. The bathroom was very inviting and spacious. There was a nice arm chair in the room as well. We had a pet friendly room on a pet friendly floor. You would never know the floor or room were pet friendly by seeing them (or smelling them).
The location was great. We valet parked the car for our stay. You just call the reception before you need the car and they pull it to the front for you. Haymarket is the closest stop, although it is Boston and you can walk EVERYWHERE. Faneuil Hall is just blocks away. We walked to the North End, the aquarium, downtown crossing... everywhere.
Again, I would HIGHLY recommend this hotel. I will definitely stay at this hotel again.

We stayed at the Onyx twice in a fortnight at each end of a tour of New England, having stayed at Kimpton hotels before. These stays were as expected, nice room and very good service from all the staff we encountered. Location is fantastic for the centre of Boston either if you want to walk or get a cab.
Couldn't fault any of the services provided, very clean and well equipped and enjoyed the wine & beer hour which is a chance to chat to those who gather informally in the lobby each evening.
Would certainly return when in Boston.

We love the Kimpton Hotels and, while this was not our favorite, it is a very nice little hotel. The rooms are on the small side. On the plus side, the location is quiet but is within convenient walking distance to all the major downtown attractions. The staff, as always for Kimpton, was very helpful and friendly. The beds at Kimpton hotels are INCREDIBLY comfortable, so much so that people often buy the mattresses from the company who supplies them, and my bed was no exception. The sheets are always Frette and so nice to settle in to. The evening wine reception featuring different types of wines each month is something I always look forward to at Kimpton properties. I was disappointed to arrive in the early evening, exhausted after traveling from Paris to Newark and then to Boston, and get no help lugging my two bulky bags in the door and to the desk even though two employees with no other clients stood behind the desk and watched me. Not exactly the welcome I've come to look forward to for this particular company. That and the very small room are my only issue. BUT I still plan to stay there again next time I am in Boston because it's such a welcoming atmosphere and (with the exception of my arrival which I think must be an anomaly) it is one of the most welcoming hotels I've ever stayed in. I would say for the price it's a very good bargain.
