Very good

We stayed here in Jan 2007. it was the first hotel we stayed in Aus-NZ trip and we were not too sure of what to expect or to compare with. But Sebel was very good. We missed the Sebel facilities we got in all the other hotels we stayed in for the rest of our trip. Locality to centre of Melbourne, cleanliness and the feeling we had all the facilities of a mini flat were all pluses after a long trip from Edinburgh. Great!

Could be terrific, but...

We had a 2 story loft room, the bedroom and main bathroom being upstairs and the lounge, ktichen and second bathroom on the entry level. The room has a huge window which overlooks the pleasant Queen St. We did not have noise problems from the laneway which other reviewers mentioned as we were on the street side. View of trees and interesting buildings.
The furnishings are all new and pleasant though not luxurious enough. The kitchen and bathroom were bright and modern with wood cupboards in kitchen and a spa bath in main.
However, there is not enough hot water and the water pressure was abysmal. When we tried to have a spa bath and shower soon after the hot ran out and remained cool for ages.
The bed was comfortable but not up to 4.5 star standard - we expected something a bit more plush. The airconditioning controls were confusing and didn't do what they were supposed to - so some of the time we were stiffling from the heat.
The hotel common areas are pleasantly furnished in both traditional and modern furnishings, which look more comfortable than they really are.
I liked the hotel but wouldn't stay there again because of the hot water issue and the bed - not quite up to standard. The hotel is run by Mirvac. a home building company, so they have done well in designing the modern rooms in this old building - but the furnishings should be more luxurious and the plumbing improved!
The staff were young and pleasant and helpful.

My husband and I toured Australia November/December last year and we booked a one bedroom suite at The Sebel in Melbourne midway through our trip. The suite was everything and more we could want - a large lounge area, spacious kitchen with all the amenities, dining table and four chairs, perfectly ample bedroom with en-suite bathroom consisting of the normal bath, shower, sink etc. but most important of all a washing machine and tumble dryer (after travelling the Great Ocean Road a must for our case full of dirty laundry!) We had excellent service from the staff we encountered namely, the Porters and Reception personnel - nothing seemed too much trouble especially when we had to enlist the help of one of the Porters to show us how the washing machine worked - he even took the bulk of our washing to get it tumble dryed at the hotel laundry (no extra cost) and delivered it 8am the following day. The views of the city from our room was amazing - we had a corner suite with views to the front and side and guess what -you could OPEN the windows! We did not eat at the restaurant so cannot comment on that but the room service we had one night was right on the money. The hotel is conveniently located and when we visit Melbourne again we will definitely stay at this hotel.

I stayed here with my Dad for three nights and we had a great time. We were on the 8th floor with a streetscape view - what you would expect for a Melbourne CBD location.
Our suite was spacious and the sofabed in the sitting room very comfortable. The bathroom had everything we needed and though trivial I must mention the hair conditioner, because it's rare to find one in a hotel that does its job. We didn't use all the facilities of the suite because we're not into self-catering, but it was handy to have a washer-drier in the bathroom instead of having to use an expensive hotel laundry. The only downside was that it did take us two nights to work out where we had gone wrong with the aircon. I recommend asking for help as soon as you have a problem!
Breakfast was good, and great value, and the brasserie also a very pleasant place to spend a couple of hours. As this is right in the heart of the business district, it can be hard to find somewhere to sit if you come in after a day's sightseeing just about the time local workers leave the office - this is a very popular venue. By 7pm though you'll be fine as the crowd thins out.
We were also caught out, as was a previous reviewer, by the Friday night private event. Pity we couldn't have had some notice of that from reception or via a note in the room.
