My partner and I stayed at the Amanwana for 4 nights last year. It was one of the most amazing time i ever had. The ocean surrounding this private island (its a eco protected site) is extremely clear and breaming with ocean life. The resort had few guests and that made the trip even nicer as the staff to guest ratio was like 25 to 1. The resort has tents as accommodation. It's all about understated luxury, great service and fantastic environment. You will never run out of things to do as there's a long list of activites provided in the hotel. There is only one restaurant on the island but for USD 100, you get food cooked for you anytime you want. Food was hearty and fine.
The trip ain't cheap, but it was value for money. We have stayed in many luxury hotels and found that Amanwana is definitely one of the best. However, if you are looking for flashy and in your face luxury, i think this place won't be suitable.
I will definitely recommend the Amanwana!

I must start by saying this hotel was very disappointing in every aspect.
The rooms (tents) look great on photos, but when you get there you realize the photos have probably been taken more than 10 years ago, and the only impression on the room is that it's old and dirty. I saw spider webs and dust all over, the walls would really use a coat of fresh paint and toilet and shower cabins are crying for a face-lift.
There are no bath-tubs in tents.
There were no ocean tents available, so we booked a jungle tent, and guess what! The beach can only be used by ocean tent guests, and jungle tent guests can use the small beach-club where they pack you up like sardines, and it's not even a beach, but a wooden deck on a rock.
The staff isn't properly trained, some were unresponsive, even unfriendly, while some were too chatty. The food was mediocre.
Internet access is available at the bar only, but don't count on it, since it goes down all the time, and even if it's working, it's extremely slow.
The only good thing about Amanwana is the underwater life - Moyo Island is a protected area, so diving is simply amazing.
Everyone knows the most important thing about a hotel is the general manager - well, this general manager is also the chef and the diving instructor, who spends his whole day diving - i'm not in the hotel business, but i'm sure you can't run a hotel from underwater. I heard he's moving to Hotel Bora Bora, which might be a good thing for Amanwana, but i'm sure it's not good for Hotel Bora Bora.
In the end, we left 2 days earlier, and i'm certain we won't go back, at least not until many things have changed.

This was in 1999. Totally awesome. From start to finish. Prop transfer from Bali. Great welcome aboard luxury yacht. barefoot luxury at its best. Sumptuous tents with neat bathroom. Great sushi and other food. Perfect dive centre and instructors. Reef of good quality, perfect service, 5-7 nights recommended stay, super beach-side spa, you MUST book music pavillion for a romantic dinner with your choice of music and no other couple around in total privacy.
