What a great staff!! Okay, it would have been nice to know that the hotel was under construction and had scaffolding all over the place. Also, the rooms towards the front of the hotel get ALL of the street noise from the locals having a good ol' time until the wee hours of the morning. If your room is in the back of the hotel, you will sleep soundly. Don't plan on much closet space or moving around room. Some of these rooms are smaller than any room I ever stayed in overseas. Personally, my family and I will not be staying here again. I wish their staff was at every hotel in the world as they were just fabulous!

The hotel is in a great location and the staff were fabulous: very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The cleaning staff did a good job.
The room was small, but not the smallest of stayed in for that price. I didn't have the experience of the green water like some travellers. The windows were terrible though, because they didn't block the street noise and it's a main street with a bar next door. They also didn't block the construction noise. The hotel website says the renovations would be done by spring 2008. They weren't.
The site also says because it's a historic hotel there is no elevator service. Well, there is an elevator, it's just broken. The staff did offer to carry my suitcase up to the fifth floor, but I'd recommend the elevator be repaired as part of the renovations instead. The mattress was lumpy and the room was musty. I'm usure that can be avoided in an old building next to the sea though.
Monterey doesn't have a lot of mid-price hotel options (it's either motor inns or luxe hotels for the most part), so I'd stay here again. Also, the staff was great. I just wasn't as charmed other travellers.

When booking I expected a quaint historical hotel for the stay. The room rate was still relatively high but still less than some of the major resorts. I was not prepared for the very small rooms which were poorly designed. THe furniture was beautiful, but the room was not comfortable. The TV volume did not work and they were unable to fix the problem or switch TV's. The street noise for a "room with a view" was not acceptable. Additionally, they neglected to mention that the hotel which was supposed to be updated with modern amenities did not offer air conditioning. While I love windows that open and a ceiling fan it did not compensate for the heat. Overall, the room and hotel were not very comfortable and offered no real amenities to make the stay enjoyable. If you do not mind stairs and no amenities, it is fine. How some of the people stayed there without complaint is beyond me!

The hotel staff were simply wonderful Every one we dealt with was friendly and very helpful. Each one went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. They even opened the breakfast area at 3 AM the morning of the Big Sur Marathon so runners could get their coffee. The hotel is an old one and there is no elevator but the staff were always ready to help with luggage. Some rooms were a bit noisy and some were small but the rooms were comfortable, Mostly it was the staff who were just outstanding at this hotel.

I stayed in this charming, historic hotel from mid - December 2007 to early May 2008 while visiting Monterey on business and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's architecture and Monterey's sea-foam air combine to offer a wonderful European atmosphere. The staff was 5 star helping with genuine warmth, great professionalism, pleasant hospitality, and wonderful attention to detail. The breakfast was very nice and included fresh strawberries and the housekeeping was excellent. When I visit Monterey in the future, I will stay at Hotel Monterey.
