When we arrived at the hotel there was no one to be found. After standing around for 15 minutes a woman finally walked through the door and started folding her laundry. When we asked how to check in she made no attempt to hide the inconvenience it was to her to check us in. Our room was clean and a great lay out for a family with children who are not ready for their own room and parents who want some space. Our bathroom light burnt out and was quickly fixed. Our biggest problem came when we allowed our two sons (ages 4 and 7) to run from the pool to the office to ask for extra towels, after they were missing for longer than we expected we went to check on them and found the young man who had changed our light bulbs with the clerk giving our sons a rather inappropriate show. Our kids loved the pool and the train; we were not very fond of the lack of professionalism presented by these employees.

This was an average place to stay in my opinion. Nothing fancy, but not any more expensive than everything else in the Durango area. Convenient location to town and nice view of the Durango/Silverton train. Worked just fine for my family of 4, but did get a little warm in the upstairs loft until it cooled off at night.

We arrived on 12/20 and stayed thru 6 a.m. on 12/22. The room did not have a coffee machine. This was not the major problem.....believe me! We left our room at 6:00 a.m. to check out for our ski lessons at Purgatory Mountain. There was no one in the office to check us out, nor did anyone answer the extension clearly posted on the front door, to call if you needed assistance! A lot of good it did to post the extension!!! The voice message clearly states that the IH Inn is open from 6 am till 10:30 pm every day, yet no one showed up! We waited as long as we could (till 7 a.m) and we finally just had to lock our keys in our room and leave so that we could get to Purgatory on time! Upon arriving at Purgatory and trying to contact the IH Inn again, we called the Non-emergency police department and they contacted the manager- that was at almost 8 a.m. I finally contacted and spoke with two girls at the front desk a total of 5 or 6 times over our vacation - Hillary and Rachael. Both of these girls promised that they would speak to their mananger Michael and call me back.......This never happened. No one ever called me back. We wanted to pay cash for our stay and not charge it to our credit card, but they had already charged our credit card even after I spoke with Hillary and Rachael and explained to them that I did not want the charges on my credi t card. Turns out Michael charged my credit card...but never bothered to call me first! I had left 3 messages for this manager Michael, and he never called me back.....Finally I left a 4th message for him to call me, leaving and different name and my husbands cell number and he called me back almost immediately! Funny! ? ! He didn't want to talk to me when I needed to discuss an issue with him! .....After all of the messages and the conversations with the two girls who work there....he told me he did not care if we wanted to pay with cash, the charges had already been placed on my credit card, he did not care that there was no one in the office to assist customers with check out on the morning of the 22nd. He was incredibly rude to us both and he had no concern for anything! On top of that, I called my credit card company and they showed 7 pending charges on my card from the Iron Horse Inn. Based on this, I had to put my credit card on fraud watch. We do not at all recommend the Iron Horse Inn. We placed this letter here to deter anyone who is thinking of staying there just because the rates are cheap. Stay somewhere where they actually care! Contact the Durango Chamber of Commerce for local hotels with better service than this one. Merry Christmas!

Stayed one night over Father's Day weekend '07. The room was clean and neat. The carpet was overdue for replacement. There was a king bed on the main floor and two queens in a loft area. The loft was extremely hot. There were 2 small loft windows which provided little airflow. I appreciate the room had a mini-fridge and microwave. The bath could have used some re-calking and the shower head was extremely low on the wall. I'm 5'10'' and the pipe came out of the wall at nose height, add a bit of downward curve for the shower head and it became a trying experience to get clean. Very low water pressure.
The hotel has a very large indoor pool and good size hot tub. The kids enjoyed watching the Durango/Silverton Narrow Guage train going by on a regular basis.
All in all I'd rate it an average stay.
