Do Not Stay Here! Horrible Place!

This "hostal" was MUCH worse than I could have ever imagined! The location may have been "close to" the Gran Via; however, you had to walk down dark, alley-like streets filled with hookers, drug deals being made, suspicious people walking around. The TAXIS don't even want to go there. The police stopped us as soon as we arrived to tell us there were hookers, drugs, a BAD pickpocket problem, and theft of all types.
The lobby is TINY and the elevator is only large enough for 1 person plus luggage at a time! The rooms were dingy, stuffy (and they refused to turn on the air conditioning), the walls were dirty, and I did not want to even try the bedding! One of our rooms had an odor of urine, and on the first floor, you could not open your window for fresh air because of the danger of theft / break-ins. We moved out the same night we checked in, because it was so awful -- and the hotel refused any sort of refund at all.
DO NOT STAY HERE!!!

I stayed in the Hotel Laris for 1 night for business in Madrid in May 2008. The hotel is fairly grotty - as mentioned previously, the location for the metro is fine, but there are many prostitutes and drug dealers hanging around. As a single female traveller returning back to the hotel after an evening meal at midnight, it's not the most pleasant experience. The hotel has absolutely no business facilities.
However, once the hotel realised that I was popping in and out to / from appointments, they were happy to help me book taxis and even use the breakfast room to work. They spoke next to no English.
This hotel is probably fine for a budget weekend away when you spend no time in it, but it did not particularly serve my needs. The rooms are basic and the bathrooms a true tribute to the 70s. My window opened out onto a central courtyard where the sound of everyone opening / closing their blinds echoed around.

My girlfriend got me trip to see a real madrid match and she opted for this hotel by not really reading any reviews. It was only after I found out about the wonderful gift that I went on and looked. I was slightly worried to hear the negative points about the prostitutes & junkies so I braced myself for the worst!!
Yes the street is VERY slightly off the main gran via and yes, there were prostitutes hanging about BUT they were extremely harmless and you would see them in plenty of other streets so dont let this put you off. I personally didnt see any junkies at all.
I believe it is perfect for anyone who wants to get out and about and see madrid. We were very raely in the hotel but when we were they were very helpful, rooms were clean & brealkast was fine. The staff were so good and would get you anything you asked for, within reason.
Perhaps the best thing is you are within walking distance of EVERYWHERE and if your not there is a metro right beside you!!

As mentioned in earlier reviews, the distance to the Gran Via is a big plus.
But, as also mentioned before, returning from your dinner means passing by several prostitues and junkies. Which was probably the only moment of the day we didn't mind some rain, (prostitues and junkies apparently aren't very fond of it either)
The rooms were ok, fine for just spending your night and nothing more, not in the best condition but ok. (keep in mind this hotel is not the one of the most expensive hotels) The bathroom was not in the best condition either but there was all you need (bath, shower, toilet, etc)
The staff was nice, but their english is terrible (don't try to ask for a weather forecast or a taxi in english). Even though the comunication didn't went very smooth, they were helpfull.
I strongly recommend not to sign up for the breakfast, Madrid has an enourmous number of coffee and tea shops where they can provide you a breakfast for less money (including a fresh squeezed orange juice!)

First tme in Madrid a bit daunting when we pulled up but the room
was clean and tidy and good enough for my wife and me.You dont go to Madrid to sit in your hotel room. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The ladies never bothered us at all and when we came in at midnight time we never felt intimidated. So on the whole the hotels fine and good enough for a base.
