As ever I agree with most of what has been written before. This is a comfortable rather traditional hotel in a nice neighbourhood whose food both breakfast and dinner is well above average. Staff range from superb - Gonzales? on front desk - to surly. I have rarely been cursed so obviously by a bell hop under his breath when leaving my room because I didn't offer him a tip. Sorry ! I had just arrived and had no currency other than $100 billls so that was why you didn't get one!
The staff were civil rather than friendly and I got the impression that several of them had been there a long time and rather resented the endless succession of wealthy guests who came and went. Like a previous reporter I was the only diner one evening although the food was excellent.
Overall it is a bit stiff, chintzy and clubby in style. It should lighten up both in terms of decor and attitude and stop taking itself quite so seriously.
In terms of value however it was incredible. Dinner bed and breakfast over two nights for US $246 with plenty of wine is a bargain! I wouldn't take the family for a week but as a nice business stopover for a couple of days it did the job.
A nice small hotel, excellent old fashion service

The Beltmont House is a beautiful, luxury hotel in Montevideo, URuguay.
There are many antiques in the lobby , library and other rooms on the ground floor.
Our room was well appointed, and service was spotless. They make a point to be of help, suggesting places to visit, and printing out any requested information. For instance I asked for the timetable of Buquebus to Buenos Aires and got a print out in a few minutes.
Buffet breakfast is included and is as good as it can get. Everything fresh, even the marmelades are home made and delicious.
Smoked salmon, eggs, ham, cakes, all kind of breads and fruits.
Only complain is that whatever you spend in the bar or restaurant is changed into dollars, so at the end of the stay the total bill is in dollars. I noticed the exchange they used turned in a little advantage to the hotel.I do not know why they do this since the official currency is the Uruguayan peso. Also I noticed that phone calls are very expensive. It is like if the hotel has not kept up with the current trend of making calls more afordable. Also there is a charge to use internet, that was not inexpensive.

Into BA, buquebus to Colonia, bus to Montevideo, taxi to Belmont House which was a most attractive and welcomingd destination after a long travel day and night. Not far from the airport and in a a residential area a good 20 minutes from downtown, the hotel is a change from a typical (sometimes noisy) city location. Our room was spacious and well-decorated in a traditional style and the hotel was quiet. We enjoyed the hot buffet breakfast with assorted breads, eggs, fresh juice and fruit. An attentive waiter turned down the jazzy music. We often checked the internet after breakfast with a third cup of coffee and spent time by the pool planning our day. A new exercise club/hospitality room is about to open. The front desk was helpful with maps and their suggestions for dinner at Old Man and the Sea was a good one.
We especially loved wandering the elegant side streets near the Belmont which house embassies and consulates. Just three blocks away is an upscale village shopping center with pharmacy, cafes, sportswear shop, supermarket for wine and chocolate and our favorite restaaurant, Garcia. An attractive crowd gathers outside for drinks and dinner which includes baby beef or rack of lamb, both were delicious. Those two entrees with decent wine were $60. for two...not cheap but half of a US price. The beef was the best on our trip.
Yes, the beach is nearby and so is the bus which takes you to the center of town and to other sights and museums. The rental car company delivered our car to the hotel when we were ready to set off to explore the beautiful Uruguayan beaches.
Also nearby is the Carrasco Raquet Club which had many clay courts and a big clubhouse. We imagine the Belmont could arrange for play there.
