I recently attended a conference in Leipzig and, having a not-so-extravagant expenses budget at my disposal, booked a room at the Stern for 37.00 EUR / night, breakfast included.
On their website they claim that the property is a 10 minute walk from the nearest commuter train (S-Bahn) stop and a 15 minute. walk from the nearest tram stop. Probably they tested this while running at high speed, not while lugging a huge suitcase and a flight bag. As the hotel is situated in an industrial zone (Industriegebiet West) on the outskirts of town, trains and trams take about 15 minutes to get downtown (central station).
The funny thing is that the hotel appears to be one of those prefabricated jobs that suspiciously look like a seaman's mission or a shelter for the homeless, regardless of where the actual location is. The ACTUAL location of the Stern is behind a SHELL gas station and a SMART (this *** little car) center and next to ... a recycling plant! The area is pretty quiet as you might imagine, especially at night. I cannot recommend taking the S-Bahn at night, though, as you will probably be the only person waiting at the ill-lit, lonely platform. Probably IS safe (because all potential muggers will have been bored to death by around 8 pm) but FEELS extremely unsafe.
Back to the hotel. Reception is ok, you receive a short briefing on the correct door-opening procedures (transponders). Beware: the hotel charges extra if you wish to pay by credit card, although I managed to reduce this "surcharge" to about 1.00 EUR after some haggling.
The rooms are actually really clean but functional (read: spartan). Premiere 1 and 2 (for you Americans out there: it's like HBO) is accessible on your in-room TV at no extra charge.
The hotel also offers THAI MASSAGES (the legitimate ones, NOT the cool ones). They're like 20.00 EUR for 20 minutes or so.
If you are in Leipzig as a business traveller, on a budget, and not looking for any kind of nightlife, the Stern should do just fine.
Tourists should probably stay away.
