Only average, therefore far too expensive

I stayed at Hanza hotel during summer and that was one of the biggest problems. My friend and I were given a loft bedroom without air-con! And it was absolutely boiling hot, so imagine what we had to go through...
Rooms are clean and tidy and beds quite comfy but the decor is not stunning. And for nearly EUR 200 per night (with breakfast), you expect to be stunned. Beautiful building and surroundings.
Also, while staying there, don't bother going out and trying to get lucky. Without asking (!), hotel concierge offered us escort service but again - far too expensive.
All in all, I know at least 2 hotels around Gdansk, which are better value for money and had air-con installed: if you need to stay in Gdansk, go to Holiday Inn. If you can be around but not in heart of the city, go to "Rezydent" Hotel in Sopot (short ride from Gdansk).

We stayed two nights in early July. We chose a room with canal view which was nice, but very noisy. Our biggest complaint was temperature in the room. it was too hot and never comfortable for sleeping. While they rooms indicate they are air conditioned, it did nothing to cool the room. Alternatively opening the windows didn't help either as there was not a breeze in the proper direction. We requested TWICE to the front desk to look into the AC and they did nothing to fix it (not even sure if they ever looked). The staff of the front desk was not great, I would call it a "couldn't be bothered" attitude.
The breakfast was ok. Dinner food was pretty good. Bar service was very good and friendly.
Rooms were ok in size and bathroom - but not great and not worth the incresaed price over others in the area.
I would choose somewhere else in the area for this price. Other friends chose goldwasser apartments and they seemed much better than hanza, with same general location, same view, etc.

I only stayed here one night, but am impressed so far.
Very nice size room, especially for a European hotel. The bathroom is also a good size, complete with a bath tub.
Large LCD screen television, but unfortunately only 1 English channel, BBC News!
I had 2 twin beds pushed together to make a Queen size bed, very comfortable bed with good pillows and bedding.
Tried to have the window open, but my window is facing the roadway and quite loud outside.
Hotel is in a very good location, right by the water and very close to the old city.
No free internet in the rooms, but you can buy vouchers at the front desk for wireless connection. I paid 9 polish currency for 2 hours, works out to around $4.00 or so for the 2 hours.
I made the mistake of leaving my room with the door unlocked, you actually have to lock the door with the key. Luck for me no one came and took anything!
Once again, elevator very small, I carried all my luggage to the 2nd floor.
Breakfast is included with the room, not sure how good it is, since I haven't had it yet.
My first time in Poland, so I can't compare this hotel to anything else here, but I am impressed with the room.
hit and miss

the Hanza is a really mixed bag. Great location, right in the centre of the old town.
the rooms are modern, clean and the beds very comfortable which is of paramount importance if you are staying for a long period (as i was)
if you're lucky enough to get a river view room you will be treated to a great view from your window....
however, the food is fairly poor. the restaurant dishes are very pretentious and lack in flavor with odd combinations of flavors used. the fitness centre is pretty much nonexistent and the front of house staff though friendly seem to just laze about in the lobby all day which IMO makes for a very bad initial impression walking in the main entrance. the hotel bar is small and lacks anything resembling atmosphere.
all that said, from a business point of view the hotel is great, conveniently located with comfortable rooms. however if you're looking for a hotel that provides a gym/swimming pool (as a 4 star hotel should), somewhere with a lively bar and good tasty restaurant food then the hanza is not for you!
