Seemed a bit thrifty on saving costs

We stayed (group tour) at the Redstar Culture Hotel. Our travel agent changed it at the last moment saying that it was better than our previously listed hotel since it was newer. I don't think I would recommend this hotel to my friends for a couple of reasons. First, when you walk into the lobby -- it's freezing cold in the winter. All the staff members at front desk, doors, and restaurants were wearing thick winter coats. The rooms seemed new and clean but they definitely didn't like to give you anything extra. For example, most 4-star hotels provide you with 2 complimentary bottles of water in the bathroom. This hotel would boil water in your kettle and simply pour it into your glass flask. There was only one bar of soap provided for sink and bathtub. There is no little shampoo / conditioner bottles provided. Instead, they put dispenser bottles on the wall of the bathroom. I might seem a bit particular but when I compare this hotel to all the other 4-star hotels in China, this hotel definitely ranks at the bottom of the 4-star pack due to their thrifty attitude. We were also told from our guide that they try to make your tour guide and driver stay in the non-heated floor. If you stay here on group tour in the dead of the winter, I would strongly recommend that you urge the front desk to keep your tour guide on the same floor as your group. Otherwise, they might end up staying in the non-heated floor at freezing temperatures. I think the staff were fine at the hotel. It just seemed to me that the owner/management wanted to make some cut backs and save money in his operation of hotel.

This hotel was dirty and had such bad service. The rooms were smelly and the food buffet was so bad you couldnt even eat the toast. If you do any extra services there, like foot massage or activities, they will pad the bill with 10 extra charges. We had to argue with the manager for an hour over some of the bills our group of 12 had. They pretend they dont know anything and he went as far as to show everyone a different price list he had in his desk. We walked him upstairs to show him the prices on the wall. It was so bad we would advise to stay anywhere but here. We travel all over China and never had this problem anywhere but here. Must be a tourist trap that hopefully will get noticed and changed.
