Well well, I simply cannot stress to you how disappointed I was with this hotel. Never before in my life have I ever felt so angry (angry enough to write a 3-page letter to the manager the morning we were leaving!) with the shocking standard of the room and overall service.
It all started when we arrived - we had booked Dom Manuel I with lastminute.com as we simply needed a stopover for the night before flying out early next morning. The area in which it is located is seedy at best - there is a strippers' bar 4 doors down - and it generally looks run-down.
Having booked with lastminute.com we were of course aware that even though it looks like a good deal (4* w/out the 4* price) that you may not get the best of everything, but fact is this place is supposedly 4* so you should be able to expect something somewhat decent regardless of how you book- how wrong we were.
We were given our room-key upon which was scribbled "Lastminute.com" so immediately I was thinking we were going to be put in the broom cupboard. We got into the room - spacious enough but this was the only plus. The decor was 70s at best. The 'double bed' was 2 single beds pushed togther, so creaky that you woke yourself up with the noise if you moved, there were specks of dried blood on the topsheet (!!!), the aircon machine - a big box stuck to the wall- was something out of the 70s - super noisy and looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the, well, 70s - so the room was pretty disappointing to say the least. Unfort I didn't find the blood until I was actually getting into bed later and at that stage I had given up. I took it off the bed and did without. Anyway, at approx 9.30pm I went to order some room service - sandwich or something like that and a beer. I was informed not only that "the guy who does room service has gone home for the night so there's no room service". but also that the hotel (4-star I remind you!) DOES NOT HAVE LICENSE TO SELL ALCOHOL. Now it's not like I'm big into drinking, but my God, a 4-star hotel with no liquor license?? You have got to be kidding me. So we did what all desperate travellers do at some point - hop in a cab and got to the nearest McDs cos it was at this stage about 10.30/11pm.
So after a night of no sleep what with the creaking beds and noisy aircon - the room was so cold we had it on heat - also because after finding the blood on the topsheet I wasn't left with much covers, we went to find breakfast, We went down, and down, and down, to find that breakfast is in fact served in the BASEMENT. No windows, horrible white light, and even though we arrived with an hour to go, there was hardly any food left. Oh, and yes, would you believe, nowhere to sit. So we picked what we could find - a yoghurt or two, horrible orange squash, a rubbery croissant - and had to trek up to our room with it. The yoghurts were the absolute cheapest most artifical 'set' yoghurts, the orange drink was just yuck - again, 4*?? - and the pastries were dry and hard. It was at this point that I decided to write the letter.
I think what really bugged me about it was that a) it appeared that since we booked with lastminute.com we weren't entitled to a decent service and b) fact is, if I knew we were headed to a 2star hotel, this would all have not been so much of a shock, but this hotel is supposed to be 4star and it just isn't! Really 2 -star AT BEST! It was such an insult to the hotel industry at large that this place was ever awarded 4 stars! I just don't see how it was humanly possible that such a place would ever be given four stars. In my opinion it should be stripped of at least 2 of those.
So I really can't stress enough my shock and disappointment with this hotel, really below-average and I would never in no way recommend anyone to stay (unless you really hated them...!!!)

A slightly surreal experience....

The first thing to note is that the Dom Manuel is located well away from the tourist areas. If you want to be in the heart of historic Lisbon, this is not the right choice. However, it is in a nice-ish residential area, just across from the wonderful Gulbenkian Museum, and close to a Metro stop (which will get you into the heart of Lisbon in two or three stops and about five minutes).
The Dom Manuel is perhaps best thought of as a time capsule - incredibly well preserved but dated. This is what an very chic Lisbon hotel probably looked like sometime between 1958 and 1976 - the fittings, including the dark wood beds, the dark wood bar, the dark wood staircases (are you sensing a decor theme?), the bright tiles in the bathroom, the magnificently kitsch false stained glass window in the basement breakfast room, and the luxuriously appointed tv room, appear to be original. The glamour here is not so much faded, as preserved in aspic. If you have a look at the photos on the hotel's web site (which also look like they were taken thirty years ago), they will show you almost exactly what this hotel looks like now.
The staff are friendly and very helpful, if a little reserved. The rooms are small but very clean and well maintained. The bathroom was sparkling and everything in the room worked fine. The breakfast buffet is extensive and essentially good but, again, like a flashback to the 70s. I suspect a few of those breakfast rolls have been there since then.
We were a little surprised to be given twin beds, but otherwise were perfectly happy - we did feel occasionally that we had drifted onto the set of a 70's portuguese sitcom, which kept us entertained for days.
I wouldn't stay here again, because there are clearly nicer hotels much closer to the action. However, the Dom Manuel seems to do a roaring trade in business travellers. If you are looking for a quiet retreat or are an afficionado of the interior design trends of the mid to late 20th Century, then the Dom Manuel bears consideration.
