This hotel has a wonderful situation overlooking the Tuscan hills. It is very comfortable and the service is good.
It is, however, a half hour walk from the centre of Volterra. The restaurant is very expensive for the quality of the food and it is not recommended to eat here. Far better to go into town and visit the many ristoranti and trattorie there.

It's a tough pull up into the main town from this hotel but the benefits of the hotel are it's quietness and the wonderful views from the pool, dining terrace and the rooms. The free parking is a particular benefit.
It's a family run business & the difference shows in the level of the service from multi-lingual staff.

We stayed for 4 nights at this hotel, at the end of April. Although it had 4 star rating, we would give it a 3 stars. The Italians tend to overrate their hotels. The room was in need of a refurb, just big enough. The en-suite was really jaded, with inadequate lighting and slippery floor tiles. The towels were also quite thin.
Breakfast was adequate, but as another reviewer observed, the coffee machine was under constant guard, which tended to slow the whole process down. The scrambled egg was congealed, the variety was good, but not fresh. When food had been taken it took a while to replenish the stocks. Breakfast staff were not the best. In contrast, the two female receptionists were brilliant. They sent e-mails and faxes for us, at no charge, and could not have been more helpful. The owner who patrolled the foyer never once smiled or greeted his guests. Our overall impression is of an hotel more suited to coach parties than couples wanting a good 4 star hotel. It had adequate parking, and you could walk into town, uphill, in just over 10 minutes. The view from our room, stunning

Stayed here of 2 nights in June 2006. 4 star rating in Italy is deceiving - compared to 4 star in other countries! Double rooms are small. We were moved to a family room for the second night. As it was quiet cool during our stay, could not get heating to work in room. Took some time for shower to get hot. Our 18 month old slept in travel cot provided by hotel, which had fresh sheets but actual cot was quiet used and dirty. Food - average to poor quality. Breakfast buffet includes cerals, fruit, cake, etc - Croissants were probably the best on there. Waiters seem to 'stand guard' over coffee making machine, even though it seemed to be a simple press button and get your drink machine - so not sure why guests could not do this themselves. At breakfast one morning, noticed one gentleman filling up a plate with cake using his hands..thought to myself, he must be really hungry and have a real sweet tooth, but then he came and offered it at each table - hygiene?? We used a high chair for our 18 month old - and this was also damaged, screw missing to keep child in at top of chair. Hotel seems to cater for those doing cycling tours. Parking available outside hotel at no extra charge. Located approx 15 walk from Volterra. Would not stay there again.

Stayed at the hotel in september 2004. Room appeared to be good, but you hear noises from adjacent rooms. Hotels caters for big groups, therefore go to breakfast before the group goes...otherwise you get only the leftovers and in a miserable way (cold coffee, etc). It happened to us, we arrived at breakfast at 08:15. We mentioned this at the reception, they smiled politely and didn't care.
