Hotel Alpino is located in a very nice place, Baveno on Lake Maggiore, and is convenient to the rail station for non-auto travellers. It is definitely a cut-rate European hotel, so nobody should expect any show of luxury. The rooms were sufficiently clean (for me), but very dimly lit. The walls weren't particularly soundproofed.
The resident manager was very pleasant and accommodating, and very patient with me when I rang him at midnight because I thought that the closed gate to the hotel was locked! The signs all over the place (Leave things in the rooms! No eating in the rooms!), etc. seem to show that they don't get the best kind of tourist clientele.
If you don't like train noise, I would strongly suggest trying to get a room at the back. I happen to like train noise, but the trains roar down from the Simplon Pass all night!
I would make the same recommendation for just about any Italian hotel--skip the breakfast and go around the coner (excellent bakery) to buy a croissant (cornetto), and go to one of the good bars along the lake to get a really good coffee.
Overall, I found Baveno a pleasant, quiet, accessible alternative to Stresa, and found this hotel a tolerable way to spend a couple days economically.
