My wife and I stayed at Albergo Moderno on 30 May 2008 on a quick weekend visit to catch a stage of the Giro d'Italia bike race. Looking for a hotel in Bergamo, I finally came across this hotel on lastminute and booked. I knew we were arriving at Milan Malpensa quite late in the evening, and wanted nothing more than a quick dash down the Autostrada. Only after booking did I find out that it was actually in Bergamo province, not Bergamo city...
{skip the next paragraph if you want to go straight to the info about the hotel}
------
The trip didn't start so well... We very nearly missed our flight from Bristol following several accidents blocking the M5, and VERY poorly planned roadworks causing queues of nearly an hour on the A38 eastbound while only 5 cars waited westbound. We literally had to sprint from the carpark to the terminal, and the plane started boarding as we cleared security - luckily we had checked in online and only had carry-on bags! On arrival in Milan, forgetting to switch the "avoid tolls" feature on the satnav off, we set off on a merry tour of far-outer Milan, and arrived in Bergamo via Cisano Bergamasco on the SS342. Whoops! At least it gave me time to get used to driving on the right (but oh so wrong!) on some quiet suburban streets. By the time we got to the steep, narrow and winding road leading 15km up the Imagna valley I had relaxed and got used to the car and roads, which was lucky as it was also a bit wet!
-------
Thankfully Stephano had left the keys and some instructions out for us, so that when we finally arrived well after midnight it took us no time at all to make it to bed, via the nice hot shower. I'll admit we were tired, but that bed (king size) was VERY comfortable...ZZZZzzzzzz
Our room was simply and tastefully furnished, nearly new and impeccably clean and maintained. Electrically operated shutters will make the room completely dark if you wish. The private balcony had great views out over the valley, only spoiled a little by some drab buildings in the foreground. Footsteps in the tiled corridor were a little noisy, some carpet or wall coverings would help.
The rooms are non-smoking (wouldn't have stayed otherwise), but you are permitted to pursue that revolting habit on the balcony.
The included breakfast was excellent and very generous - fresh bread rolls and croissants, ham and cheese, fresh coffee, juice. If it looks like you are running out (highly unlikely) Stephano will offer you some more, and make you another very good cappucino. Tea can be had with milk or lemon, and green tea was also produced unbidden.
Overall, despite the inconvenient (to us) location, we thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay and would highly recommend it, whether you are just passing through or spending a few days in the very scenic area.

Had a fantastic time staying for 6 nights at Fuipiano, It's a small friendly hotel with fantastic staff and location (as per previous reviews). It's situated in the hills above Bergamo so you really need a car, but the directions from the Hotel website are spot on and once you've done the drive up the valley once it's relatively easy (i'd never driven abroad before). The hotel is really well signposted and easy to get to Lake Como and other places of interest from the Hotel. The old part of Bergamo is very interesting and there are some great walks in the hills around the hotel as well. We booked B&B but the food was that good that we ended up going back to the hotel every night for something to eat - couldn't fault it and it worked out at about 25 euros for 2 courses & 1/4 litre wine, water and coffee pp. It's a small village so it's not the place to go for nightlife but if you like the outdoors/exploring different places it's ideal.

We originally booked 1 night at this hotel, the rooms, the staff, the service, and especially the food were FANTASTIC, A day later we came back and stayed for two more days, stefano and his father were wonderful hosts.this hotel is about 50 minutes drive from bergamo airport, with a few hairpin bends at the end of the drive, but the views are well worth it.
